Japan Standard Time in practice
Japan has a single time zone. JST was fixed in 1888 on the 135th meridian east, the line that passes through Akashi in Hyōgo Prefecture, where a clock tower and planetarium still mark it. Tokyo itself sits near 139.7° east, so local solar noon arrives between about 11:25 and 11:55 by the clock, depending on the season rather than at 12:00, which is why mornings feel early and summer evenings feel short compared with Europe.
Daylight saving time was used only from 1948 to 1951 under the Allied occupation and was dropped after the treaty that ended it. Proposals to bring it back, including one tied to the 2020 Olympics, have never passed, so the offset is +9 hours in January and July alike. The only things that change Tokyo's gap with other cities are the clock changes in those other cities.
Sunrise, sunset and the length of the day
Without daylight saving, Tokyo's summer sunrise is very early: around 4:25 AM in mid-June, with sunset close to 7:00 PM, giving roughly 14 and a half hours of daylight. In early December the sun sets before 4:30 PM, and at the winter solstice the day is about 9 hours 45 minutes long. The table above recalculates for today's date from the city's coordinates, so the numbers move a minute or two each day around the equinoxes.
Calling or meeting someone in Tokyo
Tokyo is 14 hours ahead of New York during US winter and 13 hours ahead from March to early November, so a 9:00 AM meeting in Tokyo is 7:00 PM or 8:00 PM the previous evening in New York. London is 9 hours behind in winter and 8 behind during British Summer Time. Seoul shares the same clock; Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore are one hour behind.
Business hours are typically 9:00 to 18:00, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange trades 9:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30. Trains, shops and broadcasts use the 24-hour clock, so you will see times like 23:45 for the last trains. For any other pair of zones, the time zone converter handles the date shift for you, and the JST to EST page lists every hour side by side.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Tokyo change its clocks for summer?
- No. Japan has not observed daylight saving time since 1951, so Tokyo stays on UTC+9 throughout the year. The gap with cities in Europe or North America changes only when they switch.
- How many hours ahead of New York is Tokyo?
- Tokyo is 13 hours ahead while New York is on daylight time (mid-March to early November) and 14 hours ahead in winter. Late afternoon in New York is already the next morning in Tokyo.
- Is Osaka on the same time as Tokyo?
- Yes. All of Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, uses Japan Standard Time. Sunrise differs, though: Osaka is about 4 degrees farther west, so the sun rises roughly 15 minutes later than in Tokyo.
- Why does the sun rise so early in Tokyo in June?
- Tokyo lies east of the 135° meridian that defines JST, and Japan does not shift clocks in summer. Both push sunrise earlier by the clock, to about 4:25 AM around the June solstice.
- What does JST stand for?
- Japan Standard Time, written UTC+9. It is the same offset as Korea Standard Time and one hour ahead of China, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines.
