The Australian week starts on your Sunday

Monday 9:00 AM in Sydney is Sunday 2:00 PM in California in January and Sunday 4:00 PM in July. Australian colleagues are already in the office while the West Coast is having a weekend lunch, and by the time a San Francisco team opens email on Monday morning, Sydney has finished its Monday. Friday works the other way: at 2:00 PM on a Friday in January in California it is 9:00 AM Saturday in Sydney, so a Friday afternoon request waits until Monday.

The odd 18-hour weeks come from two schedules that do not line up. Sydney uses daylight time (AEDT, UTC+11) from the first Sunday of October to the first Sunday of April; California uses PDT (UTC−7) from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November. In mid-March and in October both sides are on daylight time and the gap is 18 hours.

Which day you land

A late-evening departure from Los Angeles crosses the date line and lands in Sydney early in the morning two calendar days later: leave Tuesday night, arrive Thursday morning. Plan hotel check-ins and meetings with that in mind; booking a room for Wednesday night is a classic mistake. Brisbane and the Gold Coast stay on UTC+10 all year, so from November to March they are one hour behind Sydney.

Australian sport rarely lands at a friendly hour. The AFL Grand Final, traditionally played at 2:30 PM on the last Saturday of September in Melbourne, starts at 9:30 PM Pacific on Friday. For the conversion from the Australian side, see Sydney to Los Angeles.
