A fixed UTC+4 and a new work week
Gulf Standard Time is shared by the UAE and Oman. Close to the Tropic of Cancer, the length of the day changes too little to make summer time worthwhile, so the offset has been UTC+4 since the emirates federated in 1971. Every change in Dubai's gap with Europe or North America comes from the other side switching clocks.
The calendar changed more recently than the clock. On January 1, 2022, the federal government moved the weekend from Friday–Saturday to Saturday–Sunday, with Friday a shorter working day, and most private companies and the Dubai Financial Market followed, which trades on weekdays from 10:00 to 15:00. Business with Europe and the US now overlaps on four and a half days instead of three.

Matching Dubai hours with New York, London and India
London is four hours behind in winter and three hours behind during British Summer Time, so a 2:00 PM call in Dubai is 10:00 or 11:00 AM in London. New York is nine hours behind in winter and eight in summer: the 9:30 AM opening bell on Wall Street is 6:30 or 5:30 PM in Dubai. The GST to EST page lists every hour, including the weeks when Europe and America change on different dates.
India is one and a half hours ahead all year, so 9:00 AM in Dubai is 10:30 AM in Mumbai. Riyadh and Doha are one hour behind, and Singapore four hours ahead.
Sunrise and sunset in the desert
At 25° north, day length varies by only about three hours. In June the sun rises around 5:30 AM and sets about 7:10 PM; in December sunrise is near 7:00 AM and sunset about 5:30 PM. Summer working hours often start early to avoid the midday heat, and outdoor work under direct sun is banned from 12:30 to 3:00 PM between mid-June and mid-September.
Frequently asked questions
- How many hours ahead of London is Dubai?
- Four hours from late October to late March, and three hours while the UK is on British Summer Time, because only London changes its clocks.
- Is Abu Dhabi on the same time as Dubai?
- Yes. All seven emirates use Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4, and Oman keeps the same clock.
- What is the weekend in Dubai now?
- Saturday and Sunday for government offices and most companies since January 2022. Friday is a working day, though many offices close early for midday prayers.
- What time is noon in Dubai on the US East Coast?
- 3:00 AM in New York during winter and 4:00 AM during American daylight time. Dubai's afternoon is the very start of the East Coast workday at best.
