Time in Bengaluru

Bengaluru's IT and software services industry grew up around the time difference with the United States. With California twelve and a half hours behind during Pacific Daylight Time and thirteen and a half in winter, work handed over at the end of the American day can be picked up at the start of the Indian one, a model often called follow the sun. When teams need to talk live, the meeting usually falls at 8:00 to 10:00 PM in Bengaluru, which is 7:30 to 9:30 AM in San Francisco during summer.

The East Coast is easier: New York is nine and a half hours behind in summer and ten and a half in winter, so 6:30 PM in Bengaluru is 9:00 or 8:00 AM there. London, four and a half or five and a half hours behind, overlaps with almost the whole Indian afternoon. The IST to PST table lists every hour of the day.

At 13° north and about 900 meters above sea level, Bengaluru has a mild climate and fairly even days. In June the sun rises around 5:55 AM and sets near 6:50 PM, about 12 hours 55 minutes of daylight. In December sunrise is about 6:35 AM and sunset around 5:55 PM, roughly 11 hours 20 minutes. Solar noon arrives near 12:20 PM, since the city lies about 5 degrees west of the IST meridian.

IST has been the country's only civil time since Bombay gave up its local time in 1955, and Bengaluru has no separate local time of its own. Because India does not change clocks, every shift in the gap with the US or Europe comes from their daylight saving dates, twice a year in March and October or November.
