A shared afternoon with Europe

India and continental Europe share most of a working day. When offices in Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Paris open at 9:00 AM, it is 1:30 PM in India in winter and 12:30 PM in summer, so Indian teams have four or five hours of overlap without changing their hours. German engineering firms, Dutch logistics companies and French banks all rely on teams in Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad.

The link is not just business. Indian students now form the largest group of international students at German universities, and many of them work with Indian and European colleagues in the same week.

When Europe changes and India does not

The European Union moves to summer time on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October, at 01:00 UTC. India stays on UTC+5:30, so the gap shrinks from 4½ hours to 3½ in spring and widens again in autumn. Meetings set by a European organizer move one hour earlier on Indian calendars from late March, which is helpful in India: a 4:00 PM Berlin call becomes 7:30 PM IST instead of 8:30 PM.
