Thailand on UTC+7
Thailand adopted UTC+7 on April 1, 1920, replacing Bangkok mean time, which was about 6 hours 42 minutes ahead of Greenwich. The same offset is used in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, which is where the name Indochina Time comes from, and by western Indonesia including Jakarta.
Spoken Thai often uses a traditional six-hour clock. The day is split into quarters, with different words for each: 7:00 AM is jet mong chao, 1:00 PM is bai mong, 7:00 PM is nueng thum, and 1:00 AM is ti nueng. Timetables and offices use the 24-hour clock, but in a taxi or a market you will hear the traditional forms.
Sunrise, sunset and the seasons
At 13.8° north, Bangkok's days vary by less than two hours. In June the sun rises around 5:51 AM and sets near 6:48 PM, about 12 hours 56 minutes of light; in December it rises around 6:37 AM and sets about 5:55 PM, roughly 11 hours 19 minutes. Because the city lies at 100.5° east, west of the 105th meridian, solar noon falls near 12:16 to 12:19 PM. The seasons people notice are hot, rainy and cool rather than long and short days.
