The end of horario de verano
Mexico observed summer time from 1996 until 2022, when Congress passed a new time zone law. Clocks fell back for the last time on October 30, 2022, and the capital has stayed on UTC−6 since. Supporters cited health studies and the small energy savings; polls showed most residents disliked the change.
The law kept exceptions. Municipalities along the US border, such as Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez and Matamoros, still change clocks on the US dates so they stay in step with San Diego, El Paso and Brownsville. Quintana Roo, home to Cancún, has used UTC−5 all year since 2015, one hour ahead of the capital, and Baja California follows Pacific Time.
How the gap with the US moves
Because the US still changes clocks, Mexico City's difference with its neighbor changes twice a year. From the first Sunday of November to the second Sunday of March it matches Chicago, Dallas and Houston, is one hour behind New York and two ahead of Los Angeles. During US daylight time it is one hour behind Texas, two behind New York and one ahead of California. London is six hours ahead in the British winter and seven during British Summer Time. Frequently asked questions
- Does Mexico City still use daylight saving time?
- No. Mexico abolished it nationwide in 2022, apart from border municipalities that follow the US schedule. Mexico City has stayed on UTC−6 since October 30, 2022.
- Is Mexico City on the same time as Chicago?
- Only from early November to mid-March. While the US is on daylight time, Chicago is one hour ahead of Mexico City.
- Is Cancún on the same time as Mexico City?
- No. Quintana Roo uses UTC−5 all year, so Cancún is one hour ahead of the capital in every season.
- How many hours ahead of Los Angeles is Mexico City?
- Two hours in the US winter and one hour from March to November, since California changes its clocks and Mexico City does not.
- Why do Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez still change their clocks?
- The 2022 law let border municipalities keep the US schedule, so cross-border commuters and factories stay in sync with San Diego and El Paso.
