Eastern Time in South Florida

Miami keeps the same clock as New York, Atlanta and Washington, and changes on the same nights. Florida is not entirely Eastern, though: the western Panhandle, beyond the Apalachicola River, including Pensacola and Panama City, runs on Central Time, one hour behind Miami.

In 2018 Florida passed the Sunshine Protection Act, a state law asking to stay on daylight time all year. It only takes effect if Congress changes federal law, which has not happened, so Miami still falls back each November. Florida's push helped launch the national bill of the same name.

The gateway to Latin America

Many Latin American headquarters sit in Miami, and the time gaps shift with the US clock change. Bogotá, Lima and Panama City stay on UTC−5 all year, so they match Miami in winter and are one hour behind from March to November. São Paulo and Buenos Aires, at UTC−3 with no daylight saving, are two hours ahead in the US winter and one hour ahead in summer. Mexico City is one hour behind in winter and two hours behind in summer. Santiago changes clocks on its own southern-hemisphere schedule and can be level with Miami or up to two hours ahead.

Subtropical daylight

At 25.8° north, Miami has the smallest daylight swing of any large city in the continental US: about 13 hours 45 minutes in June and 10 hours 30 minutes in December. Summer sunrise comes near 6:30 AM with sunset about 8:15 PM; in December the sun rises around 7:05 AM and sets close to 5:35 PM. Frequently asked questions

Is all of Florida on the same time as Miami?
No. Most of the state, including Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville, matches Miami, but the Panhandle west of the Apalachicola River uses Central Time.
Did Florida make daylight saving permanent?
Florida passed a law in 2018 to do so, but it depends on federal approval. Until Congress acts, Miami changes clocks with the rest of the country.
Is Miami on the same time as Bogotá?
From early November to mid-March, yes. Colombia stays on UTC−5 all year, so during US daylight time Bogotá is one hour behind Miami.
How many hours behind São Paulo is Miami?
Two hours during the US winter and one hour from March to November. Brazil no longer uses daylight saving.
When does the sun set in Miami in summer?
Around 8:15 PM in late June. Because Miami is so far south, summer evenings are shorter than in New York or Chicago.
