Arizona's decision to skip daylight saving
When the Uniform Time Act of 1966 introduced national daylight saving, Arizona tried it in the summer of 1967 and then used the law's exemption from 1968 onward. In a desert where summer afternoons pass 105°F, an extra hour of evening sun meant more air-conditioning and later cool-down, not more leisure. The state has stayed on MST ever since.
The result is a clock that drifts relative to its neighbors. From the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, Phoenix shows the same time as Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In winter it matches Denver and Salt Lake City again. Meeting invites set to 'Mountain Time' can therefore be an hour off in summer unless they use the America/Phoenix zone.

Desert daylight
At 33.4° north, Phoenix has about 14 hours 25 minutes of daylight in June, with sunrise near 5:18 AM and sunset around 7:42 PM, and about 9 hours 55 minutes in December, when the sun rises around 7:30 AM and sets near 5:22 PM. The early summer sunrise is one reason residents walk, hike and run errands before 7:00 AM. For conversions against the coast, the MST to PST page shows each hour, and the world clock lists Phoenix alongside 68 other cities.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Phoenix on Pacific or Mountain time?
- Mountain Standard Time, UTC−7, all year. Because it skips daylight saving, its clock happens to match Pacific Daylight Time from March to November.
- Does the Navajo Nation follow daylight saving time?
- Yes. The Navajo Nation switches clocks with the rest of the US so its land in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico shares one time. The Hopi Reservation inside it does not.
- What time does the stock market open in Phoenix?
- At 7:30 AM in the winter months and 6:30 AM from March to November, since New York changes its clocks and Phoenix does not.
- Is Tucson on the same time as Phoenix?
- Yes. Tucson, Flagstaff and nearly every other Arizona city outside the Navajo Nation use MST all year.
- How many hours behind London is Phoenix?
- Seven hours in winter and eight hours while the UK is on British Summer Time, since London changes its clocks and Phoenix does not.
