SGT to EST
Singapore is 13 hours ahead of New York in winter and 12 hours ahead while the US is on daylight time. 9:00 AM in Singapore is 8:00 PM the previous evening in New York in January and 9:00 PM in July.
A zone set an hour ahead of the sun
Singapore sits at about 104° east, which would naturally put it on UTC+7. On January 1, 1982 it moved from UTC+7:30 to UTC+8 to match Malaysia and the major Asian business centers of Hong Kong and Beijing. The side effect is a late sun: sunrise is around 7:00 AM and sunset around 7:00 PM all year. Singapore has no daylight saving time, so all of the change in the gap to New York comes from the US switching on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November.
Malaysia shares the same UTC+8 offset, so everything on this page applies to Kuala Lumpur too.

Two financial centers half a day apart
Singapore is one of Asia's largest wealth-management hubs, and many New York banks and funds run their Asian desks from there. The Singapore Exchange trades securities from 9:00 AM to noon and 1:00 to 5:00 PM local time, which is 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM in New York in winter. Wall Street's 4:00 PM close comes at 5:00 AM in Singapore in winter and 4:00 AM in summer, so overnight US moves are waiting when Singapore traders arrive.
Getting between the two cities is a feat in itself. Singapore Airlines' nonstop to the New York area is among the longest scheduled flights in the world, at around 18 hours. Singapore is already on the next date whenever New York is past 11:00 AM in winter or noon in summer.
