EST to PST
Los Angeles runs three hours behind New York in winter and in summer, so subtract three from any Eastern time: 6:00 PM in Manhattan is 3:00 PM in Los Angeles. The converter below does the subtraction for any date and flags when the result falls on the previous day.

Planning from the East Coast
When the organizer sits in New York, Boston or Atlanta, the West Coast is the side that pays for an early meeting. A 10:00 AM Eastern call is 7:00 AM in San Francisco, before most people are at a desk, so the practical floor for a coast-to-coast meeting is noon Eastern (9:00 AM Pacific). The ceiling runs the other way: 5:00 PM Eastern is only 2:00 PM Pacific, which is why West Coast colleagues keep answering email long after New York has logged off.
"End of day" is the phrase that causes the most trouble. An Eastern manager who asks for something "by EOD" usually means about 6:00 PM in New York, which is 3:00 PM in California. Spell out the zone ("by 6 PM ET") and the West Coast team knows it has an afternoon, not an evening, to deliver.
Late games, election nights and red-eyes
The three-hour lag shapes what East Coast audiences stay up for. A Lakers or Warriors home game that tips off at 7:30 PM Pacific starts at 10:30 PM in New York, and a Dodgers night game often ends after 1:00 AM Eastern. On election night, polls in California close at 8:00 PM Pacific, which is 11:00 PM Eastern, so the West Coast results arrive when much of the East is already asleep.
Westbound flights gain the three hours back. A 7:00 AM departure from JFK spends roughly six hours in the air and lands at LAX around 10:00 AM local time, early enough for a lunch meeting. The return trip is the red-eye: leave Los Angeles at 10:00 PM, arrive in New York a little after 6:00 AM. Frequently asked questions
- What time is it in California when it is noon in New York?
- It is 9:00 AM in California. The three-hour gap holds in every month because New York and Los Angeles move their clocks on the same nights.
- If a live event starts at 8 PM Eastern, when does it start on the West Coast?
- A truly live broadcast starts at 5:00 PM Pacific. Many network prime-time shows are instead re-aired on a delayed Pacific feed at 8:00 PM local time, so check whether the listing says "live coast to coast".
- When does the New York Stock Exchange close in Pacific time?
- The closing bell rings at 4:00 PM Eastern, which is 1:00 PM Pacific. Pre-market trading that starts at 4:00 AM Eastern begins at 1:00 AM on the West Coast.
- Is Las Vegas on Pacific time?
- Yes. Nevada uses Pacific Time, with the exception of West Wendover on the Utah border, which follows Mountain Time. Las Vegas is three hours behind New York all year.
- How should I write a meeting time for people on both coasts?
- Write both zones, for example "1 PM ET / 10 AM PT". Using ET and PT instead of EST and PST avoids implying standard time during the summer months.
