Taiwan's standard time

Taiwan's time is commonly written CST, for Chungyuan or China Standard Time, or simply as Taiwan time, UTC+8. Official time is maintained by a national standards laboratory and broadcast to clocks, phones and the rail network. Taiwan used summer time on and off for decades, moving clocks forward in most years from 1946 to 1961, again in 1974 and 1975, and a final time in 1979, during the oil crisis. Since then the clock has stayed at UTC+8.

Taipei lies at about 121.6° east, just east of the 120th meridian that defines the zone, so the sun and the clock line up closely. Solar noon falls around 11:52 to 11:55 AM. In June the sun rises close to 5:04 AM and sets around 6:46 PM, about 13 hours 42 minutes of daylight; in December it rises around 6:34 AM and sets near 5:09 PM.

Working hours and the TWSE

Office hours are typically 9:00 to 18:00 with a lunch break around noon, when many offices dim the lights for a short nap. The Taiwan Stock Exchange trades from 9:00 to 13:30 without a midday break, one of the shortest sessions among major Asian markets. Taiwan's large chip and electronics industry often runs evening calls with customers in the United States.

Taipei against New York and London

Taipei is twelve hours ahead of New York from March to November and thirteen hours ahead in the US winter, so a 9:00 AM meeting in Taipei is 8:00 or 9:00 PM the evening before in New York. London is seven hours behind in summer and eight in winter. Tokyo and Seoul are one hour ahead of Taipei. To try a specific hour, use the time zone converter or compare cities on the world clock.
