Compress Image to 50 KB

Fifty kilobytes is the upper limit many application forms set for a passport-style photograph, and it is enough for a face to look sharp at the sizes those forms display. Upload the picture and get a file at or just under 50 KB in one step.

50 KB is the sweet spot for a face photo: small enough for strict forms, large enough to look sharp at 600 pixels.

Where you will meet a 50 KB limit

In India the 20–50 KB range for a candidate photograph appears in notices from the Staff Selection Commission and IBPS bank recruitment, along with state service commissions and university admission portals. Online job boards, scholarship forms, school ID systems and some older email or forum software use 50 KB as a cap too, because the image only ever appears as a small thumbnail.

The limit trips people up because modern phones save photos at 12 to 48 megapixels. Even a well-compressed phone JPG is 2–4 MB, so getting to 50 KB means reducing the file roughly fifty to eighty times. Doing that only with JPG quality would leave a blocky image; the tool instead lowers quality to a sensible floor and then reduces dimensions, which keeps faces natural.

If your form gives exact dimensions, such as 3.5 × 4.5 cm or 200 × 230 px, set them under Resize first so the photo is the right shape before compression. For passport photos with a specific background and head size, the passport photo maker handles cropping as well as size.

Compress to 50 KB: questions

What is the best photo size in pixels for a 50 KB file?

Somewhere between 400 and 800 pixels on the long side keeps quality high at 50 KB. A 600 × 600 px JPG at quality 80 typically lands in the 40–70 KB range, so the tool barely has to work. Starting from a 4000 px phone photo, it will need to downscale as well as lower quality.

My form says 20 to 50 KB. What target should I use?

Use 45 or 48 KB rather than exactly 50, to leave room for portals that count a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes instead of 1,024. Anything between 20 and 50 then passes. For signatures in the same form, use compress image to 20 KB.

Why does my compressed image look worse than the preview on my phone?

Your phone shows the photo scaled to the screen from the full-resolution original. Once the file is 50 KB, there is simply less detail, which shows when you zoom in. Cropping away background before compressing gives the remaining pixels more of the budget.

Can I compress a PNG to 50 KB and keep it a PNG?

Yes. Leave Output format on Same as input and PNG compression on lossy, which reduces the number of colors much like popular PNG optimizers do. Photos as PNG may still need downscaling, so switching to JPG is usually the better choice for pictures of people.

Does compressing remove the location from my photo?

Yes, by default. Strip metadata is on, so GPS coordinates, camera model and capture time are removed, which also saves a few kilobytes. Uncheck it under Advanced settings if you need the data kept.
