Peru Time without clock changes

Peru has experimented with summer time a few times, most recently in early 1994, but has kept UTC−5 all year since then. At 12° south the variation in day length is modest, so a seasonal shift brings little benefit. The whole country, from Lima to Cusco and Iquitos, uses one clock.

That puts Lima on the same time as Bogotá, Quito and Panama City year-round, and level with New York and Miami from November to mid-March. During US daylight time Lima is one hour behind the East Coast. London is five hours ahead in the British winter and six hours ahead in summer.

Sun times and the garúa

Around the December solstice, Lima's sun rises about 5:40 AM and sets about 6:30 PM, close to 12 hours 50 minutes of daylight. In June the sun rises about 6:28 AM and sets near 5:52 PM, about 11 hours 25 minutes. From roughly May to October, a low marine layer called the garúa covers the coast with grey sky and fine drizzle, so the sun may not be visible for weeks even though the sunrise and sunset times above are unchanged.

Working with Lima

Mining and export companies in Lima deal with Toronto, New York and Asia. The New York Stock Exchange opens at 8:30 AM Lima time during US daylight time and 9:30 AM in winter. Beijing and Shanghai, buyers of Peruvian copper, are 13 hours ahead, so an 8:00 PM call in Lima reaches China at 9:00 AM the next day. Frequently asked questions

Does Peru use daylight saving time?
No. Peru stays on UTC−5 all year; the last summer-time experiment was in 1994.
Is Lima on the same time as Bogotá?

Is Cusco in a different time zone from Lima?
No. All of Peru, including Cusco and the Amazon city of Iquitos, uses Peru Time.
What is the garúa in Lima?
A persistent coastal mist that settles over Lima from about May to October, bringing grey skies and light drizzle while the sun stays hidden.
How many hours ahead of Lima is Beijing?
