Chile's clock-change rule

Under the current rule, Chile moves to summer time at midnight on the night between the first Saturday and Sunday of September and returns to standard time on the first weekend of April. In 2026 the clocks went back on April 5 and forward on September 6. The government sets the dates by decree and has changed them several times, including a postponement in 2022, so the live clock above, which follows the IANA time zone database, is the safest reference near the change.

Chile also tried staying on UTC−3 all year in 2015 and went back to winter time in 2016. The southern Magallanes region, around Punta Arenas, kept UTC−3 year-round from 2017, and Easter Island runs two hours behind the mainland.

Why the gap with New York and London keeps changing

Chile and the US change clocks in opposite seasons and on different dates, so Santiago's gap with New York takes three values: level from April to early September, one hour ahead from September to the first Sunday of November and again from mid-March to early April, and two hours ahead from November to mid-March. London is five hours ahead in the southern winter, four hours ahead in the weeks when both countries are on summer time, and three hours ahead from November to March. For any specific hour, use the time zone converter, and compare Santiago with other cities on the world clock.

Late sunsets below the Andes

Santiago sits at 70.7° west, well west of the meridian for UTC−4, so summer time makes evenings very late: around the December solstice the sun rises near 6:30 AM and sets about 8:52 PM, more than 14 hours 20 minutes of daylight. In June the sun rises close to 7:48 AM and sets about 5:42 PM. The Andes to the east delay the first direct sunlight in the city by several minutes after the astronomical sunrise.
