From Dublin Mean Time to Irish Standard Time
Until 1916 Ireland kept Dublin Mean Time, measured at Dunsink Observatory and 25 minutes 21 seconds behind Greenwich. The Time (Ireland) Act of 1916, passed months after the Easter Rising, moved the country to GMT on October 1 that year. Ireland has kept the same clock as Britain ever since, which matters along the border with Northern Ireland.
Irish law is unusual in its wording. Under the Standard Time (Amendment) Act of 1971, Irish Standard Time is UTC+1, the summer clock, and the winter months are defined as a period of winter time on GMT. In everyday terms the result is identical to the UK's GMT and BST.
Late evenings on the western edge of Europe
At 53.3° north and 6.3° west, Dublin sees its sun about 25 minutes later than London. Around the June solstice sunrise is near 5:00 AM and sunset close to 10:00 PM, roughly 17 hours of daylight. In December the sun rises around 8:40 AM and sets near 4:10 PM, about 7 and a half hours. Solar noon falls around 12:25 PM in winter and 1:25 PM in summer.
A bridge between Europe and North America
Many US technology and pharmaceutical companies run their European headquarters in Dublin partly because of the time zone. New York is five hours behind for most of the year, so a 2:00 PM call in Dublin is 9:00 AM in New York, and the Irish afternoon overlaps with the whole East Coast morning. Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam are one hour ahead all year. Euronext Dublin trades from 8:00 to 16:30. The GMT to EST table shows the transatlantic gap hour by hour.
