GMT to PST
California is eight hours behind London for most of the year: 5:00 PM in London is 9:00 AM in Los Angeles. In March and around late October the difference drops to seven hours for a few weeks, because the US and the UK change clocks on different dates.

The narrowest overlap of any major business pair
Eight hours leaves London and the West Coast with almost no shared working day. When London finishes at 5:00 PM, San Francisco and Seattle are starting at 9:00 AM. Most London companies with Bay Area partners hold calls at 4:00–6:00 PM UK time, which means 8:00–10:00 AM Pacific. Anything later reaches London in the evening.
UK tech firms with Silicon Valley investors and London post-production houses working on Hollywood films live with this every day. A common workaround is an asynchronous handoff: London sends notes at the end of its day, California replies before lunch, and the answer is waiting in London the next morning.
When the gap is seven hours
The US springs forward on the second Sunday of March, three weeks ahead of the UK's last Sunday. During those weeks Los Angeles is on PDT (UTC−7) and London on GMT (UTC+0), seven hours apart, so a 4:00 PM London call is 9:00 AM in California instead of 8:00 AM. The same seven-hour gap returns for one week between the last Sunday of October and the first Sunday of November.
A nonstop from Heathrow to LAX takes about eleven hours, so a midday departure lands mid-afternoon the same day in Los Angeles. For more zone pairs, see the time zone converter.

- 9:00 AM in Los Angeles for most of the year, and 10:00 AM during the weeks when the US is on daylight time and the UK is not.
- Is there any overlap between UK and California office hours?
- Barely: about one hour, 4:00–5:00 PM London time (8:00–9:00 AM Pacific). Most teams extend one side's day to create a two-hour window.
- How long is the flight from London to Los Angeles?
- About eleven hours nonstop westbound, and slightly less in the other direction thanks to tailwinds.
- Why is the London–California gap sometimes seven hours?
- The two countries switch to daylight time on different Sundays, three weeks apart in spring and one week apart in autumn.
- Does all of the UK use the same time?
- Yes. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all use GMT in winter and BST in summer.
