London is eight hours ahead of the US West Coast in a normal week: 7:30 AM in Seattle or Los Angeles is 3:30 PM in London. When one country has changed its clocks and the other has not, a few weeks in spring and one in autumn, the lead is seven hours.

Deadlines stated in UK time sneak up on the West Coast. "End of day Friday, London time" is 9:00 AM Friday in California, and a UK government or university deadline at noon GMT falls at 4:00 AM Pacific, effectively the night before.

West Coast fans of English football set alarms. The Saturday 12:30 PM UK kickoff is 4:30 AM Pacific, the traditional 3:00 PM matches start at 7:00 AM, and the 5:30 PM evening game begins at 9:30 AM. During the weeks in March when the US has changed clocks and the UK has not, every one of these is an hour later in California.
