Higher keeps small specks and fine texture; lower drops shapes smaller than a few pixels and cleans up noise.
Higher rounds off jagged edges from low-resolution or JPG input; lower keeps sharp corners.
Smooth curves for most images, straight segments for geometric logos, pixel edges to keep pixel art blocky.

Two meanings of PDF to PSD
PSD has been Photoshop's native format since Photoshop 1.0 in 1990. It stores layers, masks, adjustment layers and text, which is why people ask for it. A PDF, though, has no Photoshop layers to carry over, so any PDF to PSD conversion has to decide what goes into the file.
Photoshop's own answer is to render the page into pixels on one layer. That is the right choice for retouching a scanned page or placing it into a composite, and Photoshop does it natively, as does exporting the page to PNG first.
This converter's answer is different. It traces the page: colors are reduced to the number you choose, each region becomes a smooth shape, and the traced result is saved as a Photoshop layer. The output is cleaner and flatter than the original, which is what you want for recoloring a logo, separating a poster into spot colors or reworking an illustration from a print-ready PDF.

Portable Document Format
PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

Adobe Photoshop Document
PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native file format, in use since 1990. It stores layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, smart objects, channels and colour profiles so a design can be re-edited later without loss. Files are often very large, and full fidelity requires Photoshop; other editors such as GIMP, Photopea and Affinity open PSDs with varying accuracy. Browsers, phones and most upload forms cannot display PSD directly.

A PDF page is converted to PSD when a poster, flyer or piece of artwork exists only as a PDF and a designer, print shop or template site wants a Photoshop file to restyle or recolor.
Settings for a clean PDF to PSD trace
Start with the defaults: 32 colors, Detail 80 to keep small elements such as icons and fine rules, and Smoothing 30 so corners in typography and geometric shapes stay sharp. For a gradient-heavy poster, 48 to 64 colors keeps the steps between shades narrow. For a two-color flyer, 4 colors produces fewer, larger shapes that are faster to edit.
Turn on Remove background if the artwork should float on transparency, for example a logo you will place over photos. Pages that are mainly paragraphs of text are poor candidates; for those, PDF to SVG keeps the text as real vectors.
PDF to PSD questions
Can Photoshop open a PDF without converting it first?
Yes. File > Open on a PDF shows Photoshop's Import PDF dialog, where you pick the page, resolution and color mode, and the page opens as a pixel layer. If you have Photoshop and want an exact copy of the page, that is the simplest route, and this converter is not needed.
Is the PSD an exact copy of my PDF page?
No. The page is traced, so it is rebuilt from areas of flat color at the color count you set. Bold artwork comes through cleanly; photos are posterized and small text loses fine detail. For a pixel-exact page image, use PDF to PNG and open the PNG in your editor.
Will the text in the PDF stay editable in Photoshop?
No. Text is traced along with everything else and becomes shapes in the image, not a type layer. Retype headlines in Photoshop with the matching font if you need to change the wording.
Do I need Photoshop to open the PSD?
No. Photopea opens PSD files in a web browser, and GIMP, Affinity Photo and Krita open them on the desktop. That makes this route useful when a print shop, template marketplace or client asks for a .psd and you do not own Photoshop.
Can I convert every page of a multi-page PDF to PSD?
Yes. Enter a range such as 1-12 under PDF pages and each page is saved as its own PSD. Multi-page documents in a single PSD are not possible, because the format has no pages.
Is there a size limit for a PSD file?
PSD itself is limited to 30,000 × 30,000 px and 2 GB; Photoshop's PSB large document format exists for anything bigger. A traced page from a normal PDF stays far below those limits.
