JST to IST
Tokyo is 3 hours and 30 minutes ahead of India throughout the year. When it is 9:00 AM in Tokyo it is 5:30 AM in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, and that never shifts because neither Japan nor India changes its clocks.

A fixed gap with a half-hour twist
Japan Standard Time is UTC+9 and India Standard Time is UTC+5:30, a single zone for the whole of India. Neither country observes daylight saving, so the 3.5-hour difference you see today will be the same in any month and any year. The only thing to get used to is the half hour: a meeting on the hour in Tokyo always lands at half past in India. 2:00 PM in Tokyo is 10:30 AM in Bengaluru; 4:30 PM in Tokyo is 1:00 PM in Mumbai.
The dates differ only late in the Indian evening. From 8:30 PM to midnight in India, Tokyo has already moved to the next day, which matters for releases or payments cut off at midnight Japan time.
Why Tokyo and India schedule together
Japan is one of India's largest sources of foreign investment. Suzuki controls Maruti Suzuki, India's biggest carmaker; Japanese loans and Shinkansen technology are behind the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail line; and the Delhi Metro was built with Japanese financing. Japanese technology firms also hire heavily in Bengaluru and Pune, so daily stand-ups between the two countries are routine.
Markets follow the same clock. The Tokyo Stock Exchange opens at 9:00 AM JST, which is 5:30 AM in India, and India's NSE opens at 9:15 AM IST, which is 12:45 PM in Tokyo, just after the Japanese lunch break.
The shared working day
A Tokyo day from 12:30 to 6:30 PM covers 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM in India, about six hours of overlap, more than either country gets with Europe or America. Book recurring calls between 1:30 and 3:30 PM in Tokyo (10:00 AM to noon in India) to avoid lunch on both sides. The Korea to India page shows the same window from Seoul, which keeps Japan's offset.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the Japan–India time difference 3.5 hours all year?
- Yes. Neither country uses daylight saving time, so Tokyo stays exactly 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of India in every season.
- What time does India's stock market open in Tokyo time?
- The NSE and BSE open at 9:15 AM IST, which is 12:45 PM in Tokyo, and close at 3:30 PM IST, which is 7:00 PM in Tokyo.
- Why do calls between Japan and India start at half past the hour?
- India's offset is UTC+5:30, so any whole hour in Tokyo becomes a half hour in India. Teams often schedule on the half hour in Tokyo so Indian colleagues get a round start time.
- When is Tokyo already a day ahead of India?
- Between 8:30 PM and midnight India time. During those three and a half hours it is already after midnight, on the next date, in Japan.
