MOBI was the Kindle's first format; EPUB is the one that now works on Kindles and everything else, so converting an old MOBI library is a one-way upgrade.

2022the year Send to Kindle started taking EPUB and stopped accepting MOBI

Amazon announced the change in spring 2022; MOBI books already in a Kindle library stayed readable.

Why convert MOBI to EPUB now

EPUB is an open standard. The International Digital Publishing Forum published EPUB 2 in 2007 and EPUB 3 in 2011, and after the IDPF merged into the W3C in 2017, later versions became W3C Recommendations. Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook, PocketBook and library apps all read it, and since 2022 so does Amazon's Send to Kindle service.

MOBI went the other way. It began at Mobipocket in 2000, became the Kindle format after Amazon bought the company in 2005, and has been winding down since Kindle Format 8 arrived in 2011. Kindle Direct Publishing stopped accepting MOBI for new e-books in 2021. A MOBI library is still readable on Kindles, but it is stuck there; as EPUB it moves to any app and back to a Kindle when you want.

Inside, an EPUB is a ZIP archive of XHTML chapters, a stylesheet, images and a package file listing them in reading order. The converter reads the MOBI text records, splits them into chapters at the book's chapter breaks, rebuilds the navigation from the MOBI index and copies the cover, title, author and language into the package metadata.

MOBI

Mobipocket ebook

MOBI is an ebook format created by Mobipocket around 2000; Amazon bought the company in 2005 and used MOBI as the basis of early Kindle books. It supports reflowable text, bookmarks and basic formatting but handles complex layouts, fonts and images poorly. Amazon has phased MOBI out in favour of EPUB uploads and its newer KF8/AZW3 format. Older Kindles and Calibre still read it.

Electronic Publication

EPUB is the open ebook standard, first published by the International Digital Publishing Forum in 2007 and now maintained by the W3C. It packages XHTML, CSS, images and metadata in a ZIP file, so text reflows to fit any screen size and font setting. EPUB 3 adds audio, video, fixed layouts and accessibility features. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most reading apps open EPUB, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.

MOBI to EPUB rescues e-books from the format Amazon retired, so they open in Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books and Send to Kindle, all of which accept EPUB and none of which take MOBI uploads anymore.

What carries over from MOBI to EPUB

Text, chapter breaks, italics and bold, images, the cover and the core metadata all come through. Old MOBI files often store the author as "Last, First" or leave the language empty; fix those under Title and Author so the library sorts them properly. Turn on Remove extra metadata if you want to drop leftover publisher tags and descriptions.

If you would rather print the book or read it on a computer with fixed pages, MOBI to PDF is the better route. Books from the Russian-language FB2 world follow the same path through FB2 to EPUB.

MOBI to EPUB questions

Will a MOBI converted to EPUB look better than the original?

Not by itself. The MOBI format stored only basic HTML formatting, so the EPUB starts from that simpler styling; nothing lost when the book was first made into a MOBI can be recovered. What improves is how the reading app handles it: modern EPUB readers give better hyphenation, font choices and night modes.

Can I send the converted EPUB to my Kindle by email?

Yes. Send to Kindle accepts EPUB files, converts them to Amazon's format and syncs them across your Kindle devices and apps. Our guide on sending an EPUB to Kindle covers the email address and size limits.

Does the EPUB pass EPUBCheck?

The converter writes a standard EPUB package with a manifest, spine and navigation document, which is what EPUBCheck, the reference EPUB validator, looks at. A MOBI with broken internal links can still produce warnings, and those come from the source book rather than the conversion.

How do I convert a whole folder of MOBI files?

Select up to 20 files in one upload; each is converted separately and keeps its own cover and metadata. For a larger library, repeat in batches of 20.

Can I convert a .prc or .pdb file the same way?

Usually. Many .prc files from early Mobipocket stores are MOBI books under another extension, and they convert like any MOBI. A .pdb can also be a Palm eReader or other Palm database book, which reads only if it is a format the converter recognizes.
