EPUB to DOC Converter

Some places still insist on the old .doc format: a school portal built years ago, a publisher's intake form, a computer still running Word 2003. This converter writes a DRM-free EPUB straight into Word 97–2003 format, so you skip the extra DOCX step.

Answer

Should I choose DOC or DOCX for an EPUB?

Choose DOCX unless something specifically asks for .doc. DOC is for Word 97 to Word 2003, older office suites and upload forms that only list .doc; every Word release since 2007 opens DOCX.

Where the DOC format stands today

Word 97 introduced the binary layout .doc kept through Word 2003
1997
Word 2007 made DOCX the default save format
2007
Microsoft published the .doc binary specification
2008

Why convert EPUB to DOC at all

DOC is a binary format: text, formatting and pictures are stored in a compound file that only Word-compatible software can take apart. Word used the Word 97 version of it for a decade, until Word 2007 switched to the XML-based DOCX. Every Word since then still opens and saves .doc, labeling such files Compatibility Mode in the title bar, and LibreOffice reads and writes it as well.

The reason to produce one from an e-book is nearly always the receiving end. Some university and government upload forms were built when .doc was the only Word format and never updated their file filters. Some literary agents and magazines still name .doc in their submission guidelines. And a few people keep Word 2003 or a legacy word processor on an old machine because it does what they need.

The conversion follows the EPUB's own reading order: chapters keep their headings, emphasis and images carry over, and each chapter begins on a new page. DOC copes less gracefully with modern fonts, complex tables and large images, so check those pages by eye. If you already have a Word file in the newer format, DOCX to DOC converts it directly.

Legacy

.doc (Word 97–2003)

The binary format Word used from Word 97 until 2007.

  • Opens in Word 97, 2000, XP and 2003 without add-ons
  • Passes upload forms that filter for .doc only
  • Usually larger files for illustrated books
Best for: Old computers, strict upload forms and legacy word processors
Current

.docx

The XML-based Office Open format, Word's default since 2007.

  • Smaller, ZIP-compressed files
  • Opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages
  • Keeps heading styles more faithfully
Best for: Editing with track changes and turning back into an e-book

TipOpened the .doc in a current Word? File, Info, Convert upgrades it to DOCX in place and ends Compatibility Mode.

EPUB

Electronic Publication

EPUB is the open ebook standard, first published by the International Digital Publishing Forum in 2007 and now maintained by the W3C. It packages XHTML, CSS, images and metadata in a ZIP file, so text reflows to fit any screen size and font setting. EPUB 3 adds audio, video, fixed layouts and accessibility features. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most reading apps open EPUB, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.

DOC

Microsoft Word 97–2003 document

DOC is the binary document format used by Microsoft Word from Word 97 until Office 2007 replaced it with DOCX. It stores text, formatting, images and tables in a proprietary structure. Files are typically larger and more prone to corruption than DOCX, and newer features cannot be saved in it. Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs still open DOC files, and some older systems and organisations still require them.

EPUB to DOC exists for old Word versions and upload forms that accept nothing but .doc; for any newer editor, EPUB to DOCX keeps styles better and makes smaller files.

EPUB to DOC questions

Can Word 2003 open the converted file without the Compatibility Pack?

Yes. The file is written in the Word 97–2003 format, which Word 97, 2000, XP and 2003 open natively. The Compatibility Pack Microsoft released alongside Office 2007 is only needed to open DOCX files in those versions.

Will Google Docs open a .doc file from an EPUB?

Yes, Google Docs imports .doc and converts it to its own format when you open it for editing. If Google Docs is the destination anyway, EPUB to DOCX is the cleaner route.

Why is the .doc so much larger than the EPUB?

An EPUB, like a DOCX, is ZIP-compressed; a .doc is not. Text adds little, but pictures and formatting tables are stored with less compression, so an illustrated book can grow noticeably.

Are chapter headings kept in the DOC file?

Yes. Chapter titles use Word's built-in Heading styles, so the Document Map in Word 2003 or the Navigation pane in newer Word lists them and lets you jump between chapters.

Can the .doc file become an e-book again later?

Yes. Upload it here and choose EPUB under Convert to; Word 97–2003 files are accepted as input. Keep chapter titles on Heading styles while editing so the contents menu rebuilds.

Does EPUB to DOC work for books bought in an e-book store?

Only when the store sold them without DRM. Protected books are refused, while DRM-free editions and public-domain books convert normally.
