How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Name and upload the pages

Rename the files so they sort correctly (001.png, 002.png and so on) and drop up to 20 at once, each up to 95 MB. JPG and WebP pages can be mixed in.

  2. 2

    Keep the book settings

Combine images into one book is on and Cover is set to First image, so page one becomes the library thumbnail. Type a Title and Author under Advanced settings so the book is not shelved under a file name.

  3. 3

    Convert and open

Press Convert to EPUB, download the book and open it in your reading app. Uploads are deleted from the server after 30 minutes.

Answer

Can I make an EPUB from PNG images?

Yes. Upload all the PNG pages at once with Combine images into one book on, and they are joined in file name order into a single EPUB with the first image as its cover. Each image fills one page, so the book reads like a picture book rather than reflowing text.

What an EPUB made from PNG images is

An EPUB is a ZIP package holding XHTML pages, a stylesheet, images and a package document, the OPF file, which lists every item and the reading order. Novels in this format are reflowable: the app rewraps the words when you change the font size. A book built from PNG files cannot reflow, because each page is a picture, so it behaves like what EPUB 3 calls a fixed-layout book, one image per screen, scaled to fit.

That is how comics, manga, children's picture books and photo books are sold in Apple Books and the Kobo store. Fixed-layout pages have been part of EPUB 3 since the IDPF published its fixed-layout specification in 2012, and the W3C has maintained the whole standard since the IDPF merged into it in 2017. Calibre, the free desktop e-book manager, treats comic archives the same way when it converts them: one picture per page, in file name order.

PNG is lossless, which is why screenshots, digital art and scans of line drawings are often saved in it. The converter keeps the pages at their pixel size but re-encodes them according to Image quality. At the default 85 a photographic page looks unchanged; flat-color art with thin outlines and small lettering is safer at 95 or above, at the cost of a bigger book.

Four checks before converting PNG to EPUB

  1. Pad the page numbers

Pages sort by name, so page10.png lands before page2.png. Use leading zeros: 001, 002, up to 120.

  2. Trim the scanner border

Gray edges and shadows waste screen space on every page. Crop them before upload so the art fills the display.

  3. Flatten transparency

A transparent background can show up dark or gray in some reading apps. Export pages on solid white.

  4. Go gray for e-ink

On a black-and-white Kindle or Kobo, Grayscale images drops color the screen cannot show and makes the book smaller.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

EPUB

Electronic Publication

EPUB is the open ebook standard, first published by the International Digital Publishing Forum in 2007 and now maintained by the W3C. It packages XHTML, CSS, images and metadata in a ZIP file, so text reflows to fit any screen size and font setting. EPUB 3 adds audio, video, fixed layouts and accessibility features. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most reading apps open EPUB, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.

PNG to EPUB packs loose page images into one book that a reading app can shelve and page through; the reverse is rare, since you would pull images back out of an EPUB only to edit them.

PNG to EPUB questions

Will a PNG-based EPUB work on a Kindle?

Current Kindles receive EPUB through Send to Kindle, which converts it to Amazon's format on delivery; image-heavy books can arrive with pages scaled down, so test a few pages first. For a cable transfer, choose AZW3 under Convert to instead. The send EPUB to Kindle page explains both routes.

Should comic pages become an EPUB or a CBZ?

Pick EPUB when the book should sit in Apple Books, Google Play Books or a Kobo library next to your novels. Pick CBZ for dedicated comic apps, which usually page faster and handle two-page spreads. If the pages are trapped inside a PDF, PDF to CBZ pulls them into a comic archive.

Why did my 40 PNG files turn into 40 separate books?

Combine images into one book was switched off. Turn it back on under Advanced settings and upload the pages together in one batch, so they are joined in name order.

How many PNG pages can go into one EPUB?

One batch takes up to 20 files. For a longer comic, put all the pages into a ZIP, rename it to .cbz and upload that single archive; the converter reads every page inside it and builds one EPUB.

Does an image-only EPUB get a table of contents?

Image pages have no headings to build one from, so the contents list stays short. Most reading apps still offer a page slider or thumbnail strip for jumping around the book.

Is the text in my PNG pages searchable afterwards?

No. Each image is placed as a picture and the converter does not read the letters in it. If you need selectable text, run the pages through OCR first and build a text-based EPUB from the result.
