EPUB to DOCX Converter
Microsoft Word cannot open an EPUB, yet editors, translators and authors regularly need an e-book's text in Word. This converter turns a DRM-free EPUB into a DOCX with chapters on heading styles, so track changes and comments work as usual.

0 keeps the book's own size. E-readers let the reader change size anyway; this mainly matters for PDF, DOCX and TXT output.
Space around the text on each page. 5 mm suits e-ink screens; use 15–20 mm for a PDF you plan to print.
Justified text has straight edges on both sides like a printed book; left-aligned avoids wide gaps between words on small screens.
A5 is close to a paperback and reads well on tablets. Match device sizes the page to the reading device chosen above.
Keep the book's cover, use the first image as the cover (comics and photo books), or leave the book without one.
JPEG quality for pictures and comic pages. 85 looks identical on e-ink; lower it to shrink large comics.
Leave empty to keep the title stored in the file. This is the name shown in the reader's library.
Leave empty to keep the existing author.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the EPUB
Add one or several DRM-free .epub files, up to 20 per batch and 95 MB each.
- 2
Check the Word settings
Convert to is DOCX. Under Advanced settings, Base font size and Page margins decide how the pages look in Word, since an EPUB has no page size of its own.
- 3
Convert and open in Word
Press Convert to DOCX and open the result in Word, LibreOffice Writer or Google Docs. The server copy is deleted 30 minutes after conversion.
An EPUB is already a set of small web pages, so its text, headings and emphasis move into Word almost unchanged. What changes is layout, because Word thinks in printed pages and an e-book does not.
When you need an EPUB in Word
The reasons are usually practical. A freelance editor receives an EPUB proof and wants to mark it up with track changes. An author lost the original manuscript and only has the published e-book. A translator needs the source text in a format a client or translation tool accepts, and a teacher wants to quote and annotate a public-domain novel downloaded from Project Gutenberg.
Inside the EPUB each chapter is an XHTML file, and the package file lists them in reading order. The converter follows that order, maps <h1> to <h3> elements to Word's Heading 1 to Heading 3 styles, keeps bold, italics, lists and block quotes, and places images inline where they appeared. Because chapters land on real heading styles, Word's Navigation pane lists them and the References tab can generate a fresh table of contents with page numbers.
Two limits are worth knowing. Books sold with DRM cannot be opened by any converter, so only DRM-free files work. And an EPUB has no fixed pages, so page numbers in Word will never match a print edition; cite chapters instead.
What carries over from EPUB to Word
| In the EPUB | In the DOCX | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter headings (h1–h3) | Heading 1–3 styles | Navigation pane lists every chapter |
| Bold, italic, small caps | Character formatting | Usually nothing |
| Images and cover | Inline pictures | Cover is page one when **Cover** is Keep cover |
| Linked footnotes | Text with links to notes | Pop-up notes become ordinary linked text |
| Embedded fonts | Font names in the styles | Word substitutes fonts you do not have installed |
| Drop caps, floats, CSS spacing | Approximated | Recheck decorative pages by eye |
Cleaning up the DOCX after conversion
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Change formatting through Word's styles (Normal, Heading 1) so the file converts back cleanly later. | Don't reflow the text by hand to imitate printed pages; Word paginates by itself. |
| Search for manual line breaks (^l in Find) left over from poems or addresses and keep only the ones you need. | Don't quote e-book page numbers; EPUB has no fixed pages to refer to. |
| Delete the e-book front matter, such as the store copyright page and the old contents list, if you only need the chapters. | Don't use the converted DOCX as a print master without checking images and margins. |
EPUB
Electronic Publication
EPUB is the open ebook standard, first published by the International Digital Publishing Forum in 2007 and now maintained by the W3C. It packages XHTML, CSS, images and metadata in a ZIP file, so text reflows to fit any screen size and font setting. EPUB 3 adds audio, video, fixed layouts and accessibility features. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most reading apps open EPUB, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.

DOCX
Microsoft Word document
DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). It is a ZIP package of XML files holding text, styles, images, tables, comments and tracked changes. It is the most common format for editable documents in offices, schools and job applications. Layout can shift slightly between Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, especially with complex formatting. Most word processors open DOCX files.

EPUB to DOCX gets an e-book's text into Word for editing, proofreading or translation; DOCX to EPUB is the opposite step, publishing a finished manuscript as an e-book.
EPUB to Word questions
How do I open an EPUB in Microsoft Word?
Word has no EPUB import, so convert first: upload the book, keep DOCX under Convert to and press Convert to DOCX. The downloaded file then opens like any Word document, with chapters listed in the Navigation pane.
Will my edits survive if I turn the Word file back into an EPUB?
Yes, as long as chapter titles keep their Heading styles. The e-book table of contents is rebuilt from those styles, so a title retyped as bold Normal text would vanish from the contents. DOCX to EPUB handles the return trip.
Can Google Docs edit the converted file?
Yes. Upload the DOCX to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs; headings, italics and images come across. Google Docs can also save a document as EPUB through File, Download, which is handy for short texts.
Do I need DOCX or the older DOC format?
Choose DOCX for Word 2007 and newer, LibreOffice and Google Docs. Use EPUB to DOC only when a submission system or a very old copy of Word asks for the Word 97–2003 format.
Why does every chapter start on a new page in Word?
Each chapter in an EPUB is a separate XHTML file, and the converter keeps those boundaries as page breaks so the structure stays visible. Show formatting marks with the ¶ button and delete the breaks if you want continuous text.
Can I convert a PDF e-book to Word here too?
PDF files are better served by PDF to Word, which rebuilds columns, tables and paragraphs from fixed pages. This converter is tuned for reflowable e-book formats such as EPUB, MOBI, AZW3 and FB2.
