Send EPUB to Kindle
Kindle e-readers do not open EPUB files themselves, but Amazon converts them for you when you use Send to Kindle. When that route fails, or you would rather use a cable, this page converts the EPUB to AZW3, the Kindle's own format, ready to drag onto the device.

How to send an EPUB to Kindle from a phone or computer
iPhone

- 02Tap Share and choose Gmail or the Kindle app if it offers Send to Kindle.

When Send to Kindle rejects an EPUB
Amazon answers with an email when it cannot deliver a document. The common causes are a sender address missing from the Approved Personal Document E-mail List, an attachment over the size limit, DRM, and EPUB files whose internal structure fails Amazon's checks, which happens mostly with older EPUB 2 books built by hand or by early tools.
For that last case, convert the EPUB to AZW3 here and copy it by cable. The converter reads the chapters and rebuilds the book from them, so it does not depend on Amazon's import. Set Reading device to the model you own before converting; Paperwhite, Oasis and Scribe screens are larger than the basic Kindle, and pictures are sized to fit.

Electronic Publication
EPUB is the open ebook standard, first published by the International Digital Publishing Forum in 2007 and now maintained by the W3C. It packages XHTML, CSS, images and metadata in a ZIP file, so text reflows to fit any screen size and font setting. EPUB 3 adds audio, video, fixed layouts and accessibility features. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most reading apps open EPUB, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.

AZW3
Kindle Format 8 (AZW3)
AZW3, also called KF8, is the Kindle ebook format Amazon introduced in 2011. It is based on HTML5 and CSS3, so it supports embedded fonts, better layouts and richer formatting than MOBI. Books bought from the Kindle Store may be wrapped in DRM, but DRM-free AZW3 files can be read in Calibre and sent to Kindle devices. Non-Amazon e-readers and apps generally do not support it.

Send to Kindle takes EPUB as it is, so converting to AZW3 is the cable route: for Kindles kept offline and for EPUBs Amazon's service refuses to deliver.
Sending EPUB to Kindle questions
Where do I find my Send to Kindle email address?
On Amazon, open Manage Your Content and Devices, then Preferences, then Personal Document Settings. Each Kindle and Kindle app has its own address ending in @kindle.com, and the same page holds the list of approved sender addresses.
Do highlights sync for an EPUB sent by email?
Documents delivered through Send to Kindle are stored in your Amazon library, so reading position, highlights and notes can sync between your Kindles and the Kindle app when Whispersync for personal documents is on. A file copied by USB stays on that one device.
Can I copy an EPUB straight onto a Kindle over USB?
You can copy it, but the Kindle will not list or open it, because Kindle e-readers do not read EPUB natively. Convert it to AZW3 here first, or use EPUB to MOBI for a Kindle 1, Kindle 2 or Kindle DX.
Why AZW3 rather than MOBI for the cable route?
AZW3 is Kindle Format 8, introduced in 2011, and keeps embedded fonts, CSS layout and sharper images that MOBI simplifies. Every Kindle except the original model, the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX reads it.
Can I send several EPUBs to Kindle at once?
By email you can attach up to 25 files per message as long as they total 50 MB or less. On this page up to 20 EPUBs convert to AZW3 in one batch, so a whole series can be copied over in one go.
Why does the Kindle list the book under a file name?
The EPUB's own title and author fields were empty or messy. Type the right Title and Author under Advanced settings before converting; Send to Kindle also reads these fields when it files the book in your library.
