TXT to EPUB Converter
A .txt file holds words and nothing else: no chapters, no italics, no cover. Converting it to EPUB gives it a structure an e-reader can use, with chapters you can jump between and paragraphs that rewrap to any screen.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
0 keeps the book's own size. E-readers let the reader change size anyway; this mainly matters for PDF, DOCX and TXT output.
Space around the text on each page. 5 mm suits e-ink screens; use 15–20 mm for a PDF you plan to print.
Justified text has straight edges on both sides like a printed book; left-aligned avoids wide gaps between words on small screens.
A5 is close to a paperback and reads well on tablets. Match device sizes the page to the reading device chosen above.
Keep the book's cover, use the first image as the cover (comics and photo books), or leave the book without one.
JPEG quality for pictures and comic pages. 85 looks identical on e-ink; lower it to shrink large comics.
Leave empty to keep the title stored in the file. This is the name shown in the reader's library.
Leave empty to keep the existing author.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the text file
Add one or more .txt files, up to 20 per batch and 95 MB each. Save them as UTF-8 if your editor offers a choice.
- 2
Name the book
A text file has no title or author fields, so type them into Title and Author under Advanced settings. Keep Table of contents on to get a chapter menu.
- 3
Convert and read
Press Convert to EPUB, then open the book in a reading app or send it to a Kindle. The upload is removed from our server after 30 minutes.
How does a TXT file become an EPUB with chapters?
The converter reads the text, joins lines that belong to one paragraph and treats short standalone lines such as "Chapter 7" or "Part Two" as chapter titles. Those titles become the EPUB's table of contents.
What happens to a TXT file during conversion
Read and decode
The text is decoded, UTF-8 or a legacy encoding, and Windows, Mac and Linux line endings are made consistent.
Find the structure
Blank lines mark paragraphs; short lines that look like chapter titles start new chapters.
Package the book
Each chapter becomes an XHTML file inside the EPUB, listed in the contents and the reading order.
A text file cannot say what is a heading, so chapter detection works on patterns. A line on its own that starts with Chapter, Part, Book, Prologue or Epilogue, or a line holding only a number or a Roman numeral, with blank lines around it, is taken as a chapter title. Calibre, the free desktop e-book manager, uses a similar pattern-based approach for text input, and it suits most novels. A text that numbers chapters inside a sentence, or has no blank lines at all, comes out as one long chapter.
Line wrapping is the other job. Many plain-text books, Project Gutenberg's among them, break every line at about 70 characters and separate paragraphs with a blank line. Copied into an e-book unchanged, those breaks would chop sentences in half on a phone, so the converter joins the lines of each paragraph and lets the reader wrap them to the screen.

Plain text predates every e-book format. Gutenberg began with the US Declaration of Independence on a university mainframe, and today web-novel sites, fan fiction archives, note apps and old floppy-disk collections all export .txt because any device can open it. What none of them can give you is a reading experience: an e-reader shows a long text file as one endless scroll with no way to jump to chapter 30. Converting to EPUB fixes that without retyping anything.
Prepare a TXT file for chapter detection
- Put each chapter title on its own line, with a blank line above and below it.
- Start titles with Chapter, Part or Prologue, or use a bare number such as 12 or XII.
- Separate paragraphs with one blank line, or indent the first line of each consistently.
- Delete running headers, page numbers and license blocks you do not want in the book.
- Mark scene breaks with a line of three asterisks rather than several empty lines.
- Save the file as UTF-8 so curly quotes, dashes and accented letters survive.
TXT
Plain text
A TXT file contains only plain characters with no formatting, fonts, images or layout. Modern text files are usually encoded in UTF-8, which covers every language, though older files may use other encodings and show garbled characters. Plain text is tiny, never becomes obsolete and opens on every device, from phones to servers. It cannot hold bold text, tables or pictures, so structure must be expressed with spacing or simple markup.

EPUB
Electronic Publication
EPUB is the open ebook standard, first published by the International Digital Publishing Forum in 2007 and now maintained by the W3C. It packages XHTML, CSS, images and metadata in a ZIP file, so text reflows to fit any screen size and font setting. EPUB 3 adds audio, video, fixed layouts and accessibility features. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and most reading apps open EPUB, and Kindle accepts it through Send to Kindle.

TXT to EPUB gives bare text the chapters, contents menu and rewrapping paragraphs a reader needs; EPUB to TXT goes the other way, stripping a book down to words for analysis or accessibility tools.
TXT to EPUB questions
Why did my whole TXT file become a single chapter?
No line matched a chapter pattern, usually because titles run straight into the text or use unusual words. Put each title on its own line between blank lines, start it with Chapter or a number, and convert again.
Why does the EPUB show characters like é instead of é?
Text saved in one encoding was read as another, most often UTF-8 shown as Windows-1252. Open the file in a text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit, save it explicitly as UTF-8 and upload it again.
Can I add italics or bold to a TXT before converting?
Plain text cannot store them. If formatting matters, write the book in Word with heading styles and use DOCX to EPUB, or save the text as Markdown (.md), which this converter also accepts.
Should I convert Project Gutenberg TXT files myself?
Usually not: Gutenberg offers EPUB and Kindle editions of most titles, with proper chapters and italics. Convert the plain text only when it is the sole edition available or when you have edited the text yourself.
Will the EPUB made from text have a cover?
A text file contains no picture, so the book has no cover image. Most reading apps then show a placeholder with the title, which is one more reason to fill in Title before converting.
Can I turn an EPUB back into plain text?
Yes. EPUB to TXT strips the markup and keeps the words, which suits screen readers, text analysis and quick searching.
