Compress Image to 500 KB
Half a megabyte is a generous target: a typical 3–5 MB phone photo can usually get there by quality alone. Upload the image and the tool aims for 500 KB, never above it.
Compress Image
or drop JPG, JPEG, JFIF … files here ·
Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Never shrink below this width when downscaling. 0 means no minimum.
Optionally set the dimensions before compressing. Forms that specify pixels as well as KB need both.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
The search for the target size will not go below this quality; it downscales instead.
4:2:0 halves color resolution and saves a lot on photos; 4:4:4 keeps sharp edges on text, logos and screenshots.
Lossy PNG quantises colors (like TinyPNG) and is far smaller; lossless keeps every pixel.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the photo or scan
JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and TIFF are accepted, up to 20 files at once and 95 MB per file.
- 2
Check the target
Target size is 500 and Unit is KB. Leave Output format on Same as input, or pick JPG when the form refuses HEIC or PNG.
- 3
Compress and download
Press Compress. Each file is sized on its own, so a batch of ten photos gives ten files that are each at or under 500 KB.
Compress image to 500 KB: what changes in the file
A 12-megapixel phone photo is 4032 × 3024 px and, as a high-quality JPEG, typically weighs 2–5 MB depending on how busy the scene is. To hit 500 KB the encoder rounds away texture the eye is least sensitive to: grain in shadows, tiny variations in a blue sky, the weave of a fabric.
At 500 KB that rounding is usually invisible at screen size. The tool tries quality first, from high to low, and keeps the full width whenever a quality above Lowest quality allowed gets there. Only very detailed images, such as a forest, a crowd or a high-ISO night shot, need Allow downscaling to step the width down, often to around 3000 px, which is still more than any laptop screen shows.
Metadata goes too: Strip metadata removes the camera model, GPS location and embedded thumbnail, which can take tens of KB on a phone photo. Turn it off only if you need the capture date to travel with the file.
Is 500 KB 500,000 or 512,000 bytes?
500,000bytes is the strict reading of 500 KB
JPG, WebP or PNG at 500 KB
JPG
The safe choice for forms. Published as a standard in 1992, so every portal and email client opens it.
- Full 12 MP often fits at 500 KB
- No transparency
- Quality loss shows first on sharp text
WebP
Google's format from 2010, supported by Safari since version 14. Keeps more detail than JPEG at the same size.
- Sharper at 500 KB than JPG
- Keeps transparency
- Some government forms still refuse it
PNG
Lossless by design, so photos rarely fit in 500 KB at full size; the tool switches to lossy color reduction to get there.
- Crisp edges on screenshots and logos
- Large for photos
- Keeps transparency
Resize image to 500 KB without visible loss
If the form also states pixel dimensions, set them first with Resize first under Advanced settings. A 1920 px wide photo almost always fits in 500 KB at high quality, so you get both rules at once without the encoder having to work hard.
Scans behave differently from photos. A color A4 scan at 300 DPI is 2480 × 3508 px, larger than a phone photo, and paper texture costs bytes. Scanning at 200 DPI, or in grayscale for a text-only page, keeps the result readable at 500 KB. If the form wants several pages in one file, compress a PDF instead with compress PDF to 500 KB.
Finally, compress from the original. Re-compressing a file that was already squeezed by a messaging app stacks two rounds of loss. The guide to reducing image size in KB covers where to find the original on iPhone and Android.
500 KB photo size questions
How do I convert an image to 500 KB on my phone?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap the upload area and pick the photo. iPhone HEIC photos are accepted; choose JPG under Output format if the destination site does not take HEIC.
Is a 500 KB photo good enough to print?
For snapshots, usually yes. A 4 × 6 in print at 300 DPI needs 1200 × 1800 px, and a JPEG of that size fits in 500 KB at good quality. Larger prints such as 8 × 10 in need more pixels, and a 500 KB cap starts to show in skies and skin.
My image is 300 KB. Will this make it 500 KB?
No. Compression only removes data; it never pads a file up. If a form demands a minimum size, use increase image size in KB instead.
Can I compress a whole folder of photos to 500 KB each?
Up to 20 files per run. Each gets its own quality search, so a busy landscape and a plain scan both end just under 500 KB. Download them one by one or as a ZIP.
What is 500 KB in MB?
0.5 MB in decimal units, or about 0.49 MB if the site counts in units of 1,024. Either way, a file the tool makes for a 500 KB target passes a "max 0.5 MB" rule.
- Compress Image to 250 KBCompress a photo or scan to 250 KB or just under it. Quality drops first, pixels only if needed, and the result opens on any portal. Batches of 20, no account.
- Compress Image to 300 KBReduce a photo to 300 KB or just under for forms with a 300 KB ceiling, such as UPSC's photo upload, or for a large image on a web page.
- Compress Image to 1 MBShrink phone and camera photos to 1 MB or just under for upload limits. Quality drops before resolution does, and HEIC can come out as JPG in the same step.
- Compress JPEG to 500 KBBring a JPEG down to 500 KB or just under while keeping enough pixels for a 5 × 7 in print, a property listing or a claim photo. The output stays .jpg.
- Compress PDF to 500 KBReduce a PDF to 500 KB for visa, immigration and e-tender uploads. Bank statements and passport pages stay readable; set the target once for 20 files.
- Bulk HEIC to JPG ConverterConvert iPhone HEIC photos to JPG in bulk: 20 per batch, one ZIP download, original names and capture dates kept. No account, files deleted after 30 minutes.
