Compress Image to 1 MB
A 1 MB limit is the most common ceiling on upload forms, and modern phone photos are several times bigger. This page targets 1 MB and keeps as many pixels as it can.
Compress Image
or drop JPG, JPEG, JFIF … files here ·
Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Never shrink below this width when downscaling. 0 means no minimum.
Optionally set the dimensions before compressing. Forms that specify pixels as well as KB need both.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
The search for the target size will not go below this quality; it downscales instead.
4:2:0 halves color resolution and saves a lot on photos; 4:4:4 keeps sharp edges on text, logos and screenshots.
Lossy PNG quantises colors (like TinyPNG) and is far smaller; lossless keeps every pixel.
How to use this tool
- 1
Choose the photos
Select up to 20 images, each up to 95 MB: HEIC, JPG, PNG and WebP all work.
- 2
Keep 1 MB as the target
Target size is 1 and Unit is MB. If the site only takes JPG, switch Output format to JPG so a HEIC photo is converted while it is compressed.
- 3
Press Compress
Press Compress, then download each file or all of them as a ZIP. Files are removed from the server 30 minutes after processing.
How do I compress an image to 1 MB?
Upload it with Target size set to 1 MB and press Compress. The result is at or just under 1 MB, at the highest quality that fits.
Where a 1 MB upload limit applies
One megabyte is the round number many developers pick when they set an upload limit, so it turns up on job portals, school and college forms, insurance claim pages and support ticket systems. One well-known example is India's e-Visa site, indianvisaonline.gov.in, which takes the applicant photo as a JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB. Rules like this change, so check the current guidance on the form itself.
The trouble is that phones moved past that number years ago. Apple switched the iPhone camera to HEIC by default in iOS 11 in 2017, and a 12 MP photo is still typically 1.5–3 MB in that format, while the same shot as a JPEG from an Android phone is often 3–5 MB. Many forms also refuse HEIC outright. Setting Output format to JPG here converts and compresses in one pass, and the HEIC to JPG converter is there if you need the conversion without a size target.
Reduce image size to 1 MB from iPhone, Android or camera
Photos are HEIC unless you chose Most Compatible in Settings › Camera › Formats. Upload them as they are.
- Pick JPG in Output format for forms that refuse HEIC
- Live Photos upload as the still image
Most phones save JPEG. 50 MP and 108 MP modes create files of 10 MB or more, which still reach 1 MB but lose more width.
- Use the standard 12 MP mode for documents
- Upload from the gallery, not a chat app copy
A 24 MP JPEG at 6000 × 4000 px has more pixels than any 1 MB form needs.
- Set Resize first to 3000 px on the longest side
- Never upload a raw file; convert it first
PNG screenshots compress well when they are mostly flat color.
- Keep PNG for text
- Switch to JPG only for screenshots of photos
Photo compressor to 1 MB: the numbers involved
- pixels in a 12 MP phone photo
- 4032 × 3024
- bytes in 1 MB on binary counting
- 1,048,576
- photos per run, each sized on its own
- 20

The tool runs a quality search first: it encodes the image, compares the size with 1 MB and narrows the quality until the result sits just below the line. Only if quality would drop under Lowest quality allowed does it scale the image down, in small steps, and search again. That order matters because lost pixels cannot be recovered, while a JPEG at quality 75 looks close to the original on a phone screen.
Converting image to 1 MB as WebP or AVIF instead of JPG keeps more detail at the same size, but check that the destination accepts those formats; many forms list JPG and PNG only. For a size well under 1 MB, the 500 KB page uses the same method with a lower target.
Compress to 1 MB: questions
Will compressing to 1 MB lower the resolution of my photo?
Usually not. For a 12-megapixel phone photo, a quality setting in the 70s or 80s often reaches 1 MB at the full 4032 × 3024 px. Pixels are reduced only if quality would have to fall below Lowest quality allowed, which happens with very detailed or noisy scenes.
Should I enter 1 MB or 1000 KB for a strict upload form?
Portals disagree on whether 1 MB means 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes. If a file made at 1 MB is refused, switch Unit to KB and enter 950; that clears the limit under either definition.
Why does my 1 MB photo look the same as the 4 MB original?
Phone cameras save JPEGs at very high quality so the file survives editing. Much of that extra data describes sensor noise and detail finer than a screen can show, so removing it is hard to see at normal viewing size.
Can a 24-megapixel camera JPEG get under 1 MB?
Yes. At 6000 × 4000 px the tool will usually reduce the width as well as the quality. Set Minimum width under Advanced settings if you need to keep, say, 3000 px for printing.
What if the site also needs the photo cropped square?
Crop first with the crop image tool, then compress the cropped file here. Cropping removes pixels, so the second step often needs less compression.
