Compress JPEG to 500 KB

For a JPEG, 500 KB is roomy: enough for a sharp 5 × 7 in print or a full-screen photo. The aim here is to stay a JPEG and lose as little as possible on the way down.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the JPEG files

Camera and phone JPEGs work best; PNG, HEIC and WebP are accepted too and leave as JPG. Up to 20 files, 95 MB each.

  2. 2

    Keep JPG and 500 KB

Output format is JPG and Target size is 500 KB. For text-heavy images, set Chroma subsampling to 4:4:4 in Advanced settings.

  3. 3

    Press Compress to JPG

Each JPEG is re-encoded at the highest quality that fits. Check the size and pixel dimensions in the result, then download.

Answer

How do I compress a JPEG to 500 KB?

Upload it, leave Output format on JPG and Target size on 500 KB, and press Compress to JPG. The encoder picks the highest quality that fits, and many phone photos keep their full pixel size.

Who needs a JPEG under 500 KB

A 500 KB cap usually belongs to an upload where someone will look closely at the picture: property and rental listings, insurance or warranty claims that show damage, marketplace product photos, and document photos on visa and scholarship portals. These systems tend to accept JPEG only, and many resize whatever you upload, so a 500 KB JPEG at 2000–3000 px gives them a clean source without the multi-megabyte camera original.

It is also the point where a strict limit elsewhere stops applying. The US DS-160 visa photo, for example, is capped at 240 KB, so a 500 KB file is too large there; for that kind of rule, compress JPEG to 200 KB is closer.

How large a 500 KB JPEG can print

SizePixelscminDPIFits
4×61200 × 180010.2 × 15.24 × 6300Fits 500 KB at high quality
5×71500 × 210012.7 × 17.85 × 7300Typically fits with quality in the 80s
8×102400 × 300020.3 × 25.48 × 10300Tight; expect a moderate quality
A42480 × 350821.0 × 29.78.3 × 11.7300Detailed scenes may be scaled down

These are typical outcomes, not guarantees: a smooth sky or a studio portrait compresses far better than foliage, gravel or a noisy night shot at the same pixel size. If a print matters more than the file, set Minimum width under Advanced settings so the tool never scales below the size you need, and accept a lower quality instead. When the file is a scan for a portal rather than a photo, compress PDF to 500 KB handles multi-page documents.

Where a JPEG loses bytes on the way to 500 KB

  1. Step 1

    Color split

RGB becomes brightness (Y) and two color channels (Cb, Cr). The eye is far more sensitive to brightness.

  2. Step 2

    Chroma subsampling

At 4:2:0 the color channels keep half the width and height; 4:4:4 skips this.

  3. Step 3

    8 × 8 DCT

Each block of 64 pixels is turned into frequencies, from smooth gradients to fine texture.

  4. Step 4

    Quantization

Fine detail is divided by large numbers and rounded away. The quality setting acts here.

  5. Step 5

    Entropy coding

What remains is packed with Huffman coding, as defined in the 1992 JPEG standard, ITU-T T.81; a progressive JPG reorders it into passes.

JPEG at 500 KB: questions

Will the compressed file still be a .jpg?

Yes, the output is a JPEG with a .jpg extension. If a form insists on .jpeg, renaming is safe because both names describe the same format, as the JPG vs JPEG vs PNG explainer shows.

Does compressing a JPEG to 500 KB twice make it worse?

A second pass at the same target changes little, because it finds a quality close to the first. Compressing a copy that has already been shrunk elsewhere is always worse than starting from the original, since each re-encode rounds away a little more detail.

Is a 500 KB JPEG small enough for a US visa photo?

No. The DS-160 photo has to be 240 KB or less, at 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 px, so use a lower target for that upload.

Can the 500 KB JPEG keep its camera data?

Turn off Strip metadata in Advanced settings. EXIF usually takes a few KB to a few tens of KB, which costs little at 500 KB, but it includes the GPS position if your phone recorded one.

Why do letters look fuzzy in my 500 KB JPEG?

Text on a colored background suffers from chroma subsampling, which stores color at half resolution. Set Chroma subsampling to 4:4:4: quality ends slightly lower, but letters keep clean edges.

What pixel size suits a 500 KB JPEG for a listing site?

Around 2000 px on the long side: big enough for buyers to zoom in on a laptop, small enough that 500 KB buys a high quality. Set it under Resize first before compressing.
