Compress Image to 40 KB
When a form says the photo must be between 20 KB and 50 KB, 40 KB is the number that clears both ends with room to spare. Upload the image and it comes back as a JPG at or just under 40 KB.
Compress Image
or drop JPG, JPEG, JFIF … files here ·
Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Never shrink below this width when downscaling. 0 means no minimum.
Optionally set the dimensions before compressing. Forms that specify pixels as well as KB need both.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
The search for the target size will not go below this quality; it downscales instead.
4:2:0 halves color resolution and saves a lot on photos; 4:4:4 keeps sharp edges on text, logos and screenshots.
Lossy PNG quantises colors (like TinyPNG) and is far smaller; lossless keeps every pixel.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add the image
A phone photo, a thumb impression scan or a screenshot in JPG, PNG, HEIC or WebP. Up to 20 files, 95 MB each.
- 2
Leave the target at 40 KB
Target size is 40 KB and Output format is JPG. If the notice gives pixels, such as 200 × 230 px, set them under Resize first in Advanced settings.
- 3
Compress and download
Press Compress to JPG. Each result shows its final size, so you can check it against the form's range before uploading.
What is the quickest way to make a photo 40 KB?
Upload it and press Compress to JPG. The tool starts from high JPG quality, lowers it until the file is 40 KB or less, and reduces the pixel size only if quality would otherwise fall below the floor you set.
Why 40 KB is the safe pick for a 20–50 KB rule
Indian bank and government recruitment forms rarely ask for one exact size; they give a band. IBPS and SBI notices have asked for the photograph at 20–50 KB and the left thumb impression at 20–50 KB too, and SSC has used a similar band for the photo. Aim at the very top and a server that counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes may read your 50 KB file as slightly over; aim at the bottom and a plain photo can come out under the 20 KB floor.
40 KB sits in the upper middle. It leaves about 10 KB of margin under the ceiling and 20 KB above the floor, and it gives the encoder more data than a 30 KB target, which shows in hair, glasses and the outline of the face. If you want to squeeze a little closer to a hard 50 KB cap, compress image to 45 KB is the next step up.
Resize image 40 KB: what happens to a phone photo
Straight from the phone camera
3–4 MB
Typical 12 MP JPEG at 4032 × 3024 px, with location and camera data
After the 40 KB target
≤ 40 KB
JPG at the form's pixel size, metadata stripped, turned upright
The drop from megabytes to 40 KB is mostly a change in pixel count, not quality. Squeezing a full 12-megapixel frame into 40 KB would need a quality so low that blocks appear across the face. Instead, the tool searches downward from high quality, stops at Lowest quality allowed (40 by default) and then reduces dimensions step by step until the file fits. For a 200 × 230 px exam photo, 40 KB is generous.
Thumb impressions behave differently. Ink on paper is mostly flat white with fine ridges, which JPG stores efficiently, so an IBPS-style 240 × 240 px thumb scan often lands well below 40 KB. If the form sets a 20 KB minimum and your file comes back at 12 KB, turn off Allow downscaling and scan at a higher resolution, or pad the file with increase image size in KB.
40 KB image compressor: checks before you submit
- The file really is a JPG, not a HEIC or PNG renamed by hand.
- The size shown in the result is between the form's minimum and maximum, not only under the maximum.
- Pixel dimensions match the notice, for example 200 × 230 px for an IBPS-style photo or 240 × 240 px for the thumb.
- The photo is upright: Auto orient fixes sideways phone pictures, but check the preview anyway.
- Photo, signature, thumb and handwritten declaration are separate files, each sized to its own rule.
TipName the file plainly, such as photo.jpg; a few older portals stumble over spaces or brackets in file names.
Compress image to 40 KB: questions
Why not compress the photo to exactly 50 KB?
Because the limit is checked by software you cannot see. Some servers count a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024, so a file your computer calls 49.9 KB can be read as just over 50. A 40 KB file passes a 50 KB cap under every interpretation.
How many pixels does a 40 KB JPG usually keep?
For a portrait, 40 KB typically holds 400–600 px on the long side at good quality, far more than the 200 × 230 px bank exam forms ask for. Busy, noisy pictures end up smaller.
Can I compress the thumb impression and the photo in one batch?
Yes, when both share the same 20–50 KB rule; each file gets its own 40 KB target. Signatures usually have a smaller limit, often 10–20 KB, so run them separately with a lower Target size.
My photo came out at 38 KB but looks soft. How do I get it sharper?
Softness at this size means a large phone photo had to be scaled down a lot. Crop it to head and shoulders first so fewer pixels share the 40 KB, and set Minimum width under Advanced settings to the width the form requires.
Will a 40 KB photo look worse on the printed admit card?
No. Admit cards print the photo at roughly 3.5 × 4.5 cm, under 300 × 360 px at 200 DPI, which a 40 KB JPG holds at high quality. The guide to reducing image size in KB explains how pixels, quality and KB relate.
