Compress Image to 200 KB
200 KB is the budget where a compressed photo stops looking compressed. Use this page when a visa form, a passport renewal or a website editor puts a ceiling near that number and you want to keep as much resolution as the ceiling allows.
Compress Image
or drop JPG, JPEG, JFIF … files here ·
Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Never shrink below this width when downscaling. 0 means no minimum.
Optionally set the dimensions before compressing. Forms that specify pixels as well as KB need both.
Pixels for the side you chose above.
The search for the target size will not go below this quality; it downscales instead.
4:2:0 halves color resolution and saves a lot on photos; 4:4:4 keeps sharp edges on text, logos and screenshots.
Lossy PNG quantises colors (like TinyPNG) and is far smaller; lossless keeps every pixel.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add your photos
Drop in one picture or up to 20, each up to 95 MB: camera JPGs, iPhone HEIC, PNG screenshots or WebP downloads.
- 2
Confirm 200 KB
Target size already reads 200 KB. For a portal with a hard 200 KB rule, type 190; for a 240 KB visa limit you can leave it as it is.
- 3
Compress and check the result
Press Compress. Each card shows the final size and dimensions; save files one by one or as a ZIP.
Why 200 KB works for visa photos and web uploads
Smaller targets force a trade: at 20 or 50 KB a face photo has to drop to a few hundred pixels before it fits. At 200 KB that pressure is gone. A 12 megapixel phone picture still has to shrink roughly fifteen times, but most of that saving comes from JPG quality and from removing data the camera adds, not from throwing away pixels.
That is why 200 KB keeps turning up as a practical ceiling. Government photo uploads want enough resolution for a face match, yet they do not want 4 MB originals clogging their storage. Content management systems, school platforms and forums often set an upload limit or a recommended image weight in the same range, because a page of 200 KB pictures still loads quickly on mobile data.
Photo size limits on visa and passport portals
| Organisation | Requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| US Department of State (DS-160 visa photo) | JPEG, square, 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 px, 240 KB or less | travel.state.gov |
| HM Passport Office (UK online renewal) | At least 600 px wide and 750 px tall, file between 50 KB and 10 MB | gov.uk |
| Government of India e-Visa | JPEG, at least 350 × 350 px, file between 10 KB and 1 MB | indianvisaonline.gov.in |
A 200 KB file passes all three of these with room to spare, which is the point: one compressed photo you can reuse across several applications. The DS-160 rule is the tightest of the group, and 200 KB leaves a 40 KB margin even on a portal that counts a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes.
Rules change, so check the authority's current page before you upload; pixel dimensions and background matter as much as file size. The passport photo maker crops to the right head size, and the passport photo requirements by country guide collects the specifics.
Reduce image size to 200 KB without losing sharpness
Crop before you compress
Kilobytes spent on empty wall or sky are not spent on the subject. Trim the edges first.
Pick JPG for photographs
A PNG photo can be ten times the size of the same JPG. Set Output format to JPG.
Set a minimum width
If a site needs at least 1200 px, enter it under Minimum width so downscaling never goes below it; quality drops instead.
Compress image to 200 KB: your questions
Can I use a 200 KB photo for the DS-160 visa form?
Yes, as long as the pixels are also right. The State Department asks for a square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels and no larger than 240 KB, so set Resize first to a 1200 px longest side on a square crop and compress to 200 KB. The US visa photo guide covers background and pose.
Why choose 200 KB when the portal allows 1 MB or more?
Large limits are a ceiling, not a target. A smaller file uploads faster on a weak connection and is less likely to fail when a session times out, and at 200 KB a portrait already holds more detail than any review screen will show.
How many pixels does a 200 KB JPG usually keep?
A typical phone photo lands around 1920 to 2400 pixels on the long side at 200 KB, with JPG quality in the 70s. Busy scenes such as foliage compress less well and may come out nearer 1600 px; plain backgrounds keep more.
Will the tool make a small image bigger to reach 200 KB?
No. Compression only removes data; if your file is already 120 KB it stays about that size. For portals that set a minimum as well as a maximum, use increase image size to 100 KB or the increase image size tool.
Does WordPress compress my 200 KB image again?
WordPress creates resized copies for thumbnails and responsive sizes, and since version 5.3 it also scales down any upload wider or taller than 2560 px. A 200 KB file under that width is kept as the original, so what you upload is what the full-size view serves.
Is my passport photo safe to upload here?
The file is processed on our server and deleted 30 minutes after compression, with no account attached. Strip metadata is on by default, so GPS location and device details are removed. See the privacy policy.
