Increase Image Size in KB

Some application forms reject a photo or signature for being too small in kilobytes, even when it looks perfect. Enter the minimum the form asks for and get the same picture back, at or just above that size, with the same width and height.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the photo or signature

Drop the JPG, PNG or PDF the form rejected, up to 20 files at once. HEIC photos from an iPhone are accepted too.

  2. 2

    Enter the minimum size

Minimum size starts at 20 KB, the lower limit on many exam portals. Type the number from your form, for example 50, and leave the unit on KB.

  3. 3

    Increase and upload

Press Increase size and download the file. It keeps its pixel dimensions because Keep dimensions is on, so it still matches the form's width and height rules.

Why upload forms set a minimum file size

Most advice online is about making images smaller, because most limits are maximums. Recruitment and exam portals, especially in India, also set a floor: a photo must be at least 20 KB, a signature at least 10 KB. A tiny file is a hint that the image is a blurred thumbnail or a scan with almost nothing on it, so the checker refuses it before a person ever looks.

The trouble is that modern phones and editing apps compress very well. A plain signature on white paper, cropped to 140 × 60 px, can easily save as a 4 KB JPG. Nothing is wrong with it, but the portal says the file is too small. Re-photographing does not help when the cause is efficient compression, not low quality.

Increasing the size in KB solves exactly that. The file grows to the number the form wants while the picture stays the same, so you do not have to re-take or re-scan anything.

Minimum KB rules on common application portals

Typical photo and signature size ranges (check the current notice before applying)
OrganisationRequirementSource
SSC (Staff Selection Commission)Photo 20–50 KB in JPEG; signature 10–20 KBssc.gov.in
IBPS (bank recruitment exams)Photo 20–50 KB at 200 × 230 px; signature 10–20 KB at 140 × 60 pxibps.in
UPSC (civil services and other exams)Photo and signature each 20–300 KB in JPGupsc.gov.in

How the file gets bigger without looking different

  1. Raise quality

The JPG is re-saved at a higher quality, which adds bytes and recovers a little sharpness.

  2. Add padding

If that is not enough, invisible filler goes into a metadata segment until the minimum is reached.

  3. Stop at the target

The file lands at or just above your number, with the same pixels and dimensions.

The other methods are there for special cases. Raise quality only never adds padding, which some people prefer for a photo going to a print lab. Add invisible padding leaves the image data completely untouched. Upscale pixels enlarges the image by up to the percentage in Max enlargement and is only for forms that also demand bigger dimensions.

Keep Keep metadata on: removing camera data would shrink the file again. If the form also checks the DPI value, set DPI tag to 200 or 300 under Advanced settings; it changes a number in the file, not the pixels. For the opposite problem, a photo that is too large in KB, see our guide on how to reduce image size in KB.

Increase image size in KB questions

Why would a form reject a photo for being too small in KB?

A lower size limit is a rough quality filter. A 6 KB file is usually a thumbnail, a heavily compressed copy or a mostly blank scan, so portals set a minimum to make applicants upload a clearer photo. Your image may be fine; it simply compressed very efficiently.

Will increasing the KB size make my photo look better?

Not noticeably. The Auto method raises the JPG quality, which restores a little detail lost to heavy compression, and then adds invisible padding. It cannot add detail the camera never captured, so start from the best original you have.

Does the width and height in pixels change?

No, as long as Keep dimensions is on, which it is on this page. Only the Upscale pixels method enlarges the image, and it is meant for forms that ask for both a larger size in KB and larger dimensions.

My form says between 20 and 50 KB. What should I enter?

Enter a value a little above the minimum, such as 25 KB. The result lands at or just over that number, which leaves room below the 50 KB maximum. If the file is already above 50 KB, you need the opposite tool, Compress image to 50 KB.

Is the padding safe, or will the portal detect it?

The padding is stored in metadata areas that the JPEG and PNG standards set aside for comments and extra data, and image viewers and upload checkers ignore it. The file opens and displays exactly like the original.

Can I increase the size of a PDF the same way?

Yes, upload the PDF here, or use the dedicated Increase PDF size to 200 KB page for the common document minimum on certificate and marksheet uploads.
