Alaska Time and the 1983 consolidation
Until 1983 Alaska spread across four time zones, and Anchorage sat on UTC−10 with Hawaii. In October 1983 almost the whole state was moved to a single Alaska Time Zone, one hour behind the West Coast, so Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks could do business on one clock. The western Aleutian Islands stayed an hour behind, on Hawaii–Aleutian time.
Alaska follows the federal daylight saving calendar, switching on the same Sundays as the rest of the country. That keeps Anchorage one hour behind Seattle and Los Angeles and four hours behind New York all year, with no seasonal surprises.
Midnight sun and five-hour days
At 61° north, Anchorage has some of the most extreme daylight of any US city. Near the June solstice the sun rises about 4:20 AM and sets around 11:40 PM, more than 19 hours of daylight, and the sky never gets fully dark. In late December sunrise is after 10:00 AM and sunset before 3:45 PM, leaving about 5 hours 30 minutes. Day length changes by more than five minutes a day around the equinoxes, so the sun table above is worth checking daily in spring and autumn.
The city also sits far west of the meridian its time zone is based on, so the sun is highest around 1:30 PM in summer, and evenings stay bright late into the night.
Working hours against the Lower 48
Stock markets open at 9:30 AM Eastern, which is 5:30 AM in Anchorage, and close at noon local time. Teams spread across the country often settle on late-morning Alaska slots, which are mid-afternoon on the East Coast. The AKST to PST page lays out each hour against the West Coast, and the world clock lists Anchorage with 68 other cities.
