How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the Letter PDF

Add up to 20 PDFs of up to 95 MB each. Every page is resized unless you choose Selected pages under Apply to.

  2. 2

    Keep fit and margin

Content is on Scale to fit and Margin on 5 mm, which suits most office printers. Switch to Fill page or Keep size if you prefer cropping or exact scale.

  3. 3

    Resize and print

Press Resize, download the A4 PDF and print it at Actual size or 100%, not Fit to page, so the printer does not scale it a second time.

Answer

How do I resize a PDF from Letter to A4?

Upload it with New page size on A4 and Content on Scale to fit, then press Resize. The page shrinks to about 93% with this page's 5 mm margin, or 97% without, keeps its proportions and gains a thin white band at top and bottom.

Why Letter pages misprint on A4 paper

US Letter is 8.5 × 11 in, or 215.9 × 279.4 mm; A4, defined by ISO 216, is 210 × 297 mm. Letter is about 6 mm wider and 18 mm shorter. Print a Letter PDF on A4 at 100% and the side edges, often holding page numbers in a footer corner or the last column of a table, fall into the paper's unprintable band, while a gap opens at the bottom. Many print drivers quietly switch to fit-to-page instead, which works but rescales differently on every printer.

Resizing the file once fixes it for every printer, copy shop and recipient. It matters most when a document crosses an ocean: an American contract signed in Europe, a US résumé sent to an employer in India or Australia, course materials printed at a university abroad.

Scale, crop or pad: three ways to fit Letter onto A4

Scale

Scale to fit

Shrinks the page until all of it fits on A4.

  • About 97% scale without margin
  • Roughly 12.6 mm of white at top and bottom
  • Nothing is cut off
Best for: Contracts, forms, reports
Crop

Fill page

Enlarges until A4 is covered, then trims the overflow.

  • About 106% scale
  • Roughly 10 mm cut from each side
  • No white bands
Best for: Posters and full-bleed images
Pad

Keep size

Places the page at 100% on the A4 sheet.

  • Type keeps its exact size
  • About 3 mm cut from each side
  • About 9 mm of white top and bottom
Best for: Pages with wide side margins

PDF measures pages in points, 72 to the inch, so the 72 DPI column is also what a PDF's document properties report: 595 × 842 for A4, 612 × 792 for Letter. A page reported as something close but different, such as 600 × 840, is not quite A4, and some printers and portals treat it as a custom size; mixed sizes like that are the subject of our PDF to A4 size converter page.

Margin reserves white space on every side before scaling. Most laser and inkjet printers cannot print within roughly 3 to 5 mm of the edge, so this page starts at 5 mm, leaving a 200 × 287 mm area into which a Letter page scales to about 93%. Use 0 for a file that will only be read on screen, or 10 mm or more to leave room for hole punching.

TipIn the print dialog choose Actual size or 100%. Fit to page would scale the new A4 file again to whatever paper the printer believes it has.

Resize PDF to A4 questions

Will resizing a PDF to A4 make the text smaller?

Slightly. With Scale to fit, Letter content shrinks to about 97%, or about 93% with the 5 mm margin, so 12 pt text prints at roughly 11 to 11.7 pt. Few readers notice. If exact type size matters, use Keep size and accept about 3 mm off each side.

Do I need to resize a Letter PDF before emailing it abroad?

Not for reading on screen, since viewers show any page size. Resize when the recipient will print it or an upload portal checks page size. Printers loaded with A4 often shrink Letter pages on their own, but the result varies from printer to printer.

What happens to Legal-size pages?

Legal is 8.5 × 14 in, far taller than A4. Scale to fit shrinks it to about 83% so the whole page fits, with white space at the sides; Fill page would cut almost 49 mm of height. For legal-size contracts, fit is nearly always right.

How do I combine several Letter documents into one A4 file?

Merge them first, then resize the merged PDF in one run so every page gets the same scale and margin. Our guide on merging PDF files covers page order and bookmarks.

Why does the A4 PDF still print with cut edges?

The print dialog or the printer tray is probably set to Letter or to a scaling mode. Choose A4 paper and Actual size or 100%, and check the tray setting on the printer itself; a tray loaded with A4 but set to Letter shifts the page.
