Compress PDF to 100 KB
100 KB is the tightest PDF limit most people ever meet, and it usually shows up on Indian government, scholarship and bank KYC forms. Drop the file here and it comes back at or just below 100 KB, with the text still readable.
Compress PDF
or drop PDF files here ·
Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Images above this DPI are downsampled. 150 is sharp on screen and fine for office printing; 72 is screen-only.
JPEG quality for re-compressed images. 70 keeps scanned text readable; below 40 artefacts appear around letters.
When aiming for a target size, image quality never drops below this; resolution is reduced instead.
How to use this tool
- 1
Add the scanned PDF
Drop up to 20 PDFs, each up to 95 MB. If the portal wants one document per field, compress each certificate as its own file.
- 2
Keep the 100 KB target
Compress by is set to Target size with 100 KB. For a portal that rejects files at exactly 100 KB, type 95 instead.
- 3
Compress and check the size
Press Compress, download the result and look at the size your computer reports before you upload it to the form.
Can a scanned PDF really fit in 100 KB?
Yes for one or two pages: a single A4 scan at 150 DPI in grayscale typically lands well under 100 KB. Five or more color pages usually need grayscale, a lower resolution or splitting the file.
Why portals ask for a PDF below 100 KB
Indian e-governance forms are built for applicants on slow mobile connections and for servers that store millions of uploads in each recruitment or scholarship cycle. A per-document cap of 100 KB keeps both manageable, which is why you see it beside fields for caste, income and domicile certificates, mark sheets, passbook pages and identity proofs. The exact number is printed in the notification or next to the upload button; read it before you scan, because some forms also set a minimum such as 10 KB or 20 KB.
A phone scan of a single page is often 1–3 MB, because the scanner app saves a high-resolution color photo of the paper inside the PDF. Nothing about the words needs that many pixels. Certificate text stays readable at 150 DPI, and a seal or signature survives grayscale, so most of the 100 KB budget can go to the part of the page an officer actually checks.
How the tool reaches 100 KB
- bytes allowed when a portal counts KB in thousands
- 100,000
- default lowest image quality before resolution drops
- 30
- where certificate text stays sharp
- 150 DPI
- PDFs per batch, up to 95 MB each
- 20
With Target size selected, the compressor re-encodes every image in the PDF and measures the result against 100 KB. It lowers image quality first, because JPEG artefacts are barely visible on printed text at medium settings. If the file is still too large when quality reaches the Lowest image quality of 30, it reduces image resolution step by step instead of pushing quality into the range where letters grow halos.
Two sections of the settings matter most at this size. Convert to grayscale under Images removes the color channels from scans, often halving them, and a stamp or blue-ink signature is still clearly visible in gray. Under Document clean-up, Subset fonts and Remove metadata are already on; they trim embedded font data and edit history, which matters on typed PDFs exported from Word. For the trade-off between size and sharpness in general, read how to compress a PDF without losing quality.
When the PDF will not go below 100 KB
A six-page color scan stays near 180 KB
Turn on Convert to grayscale, or upload only the pages the field asks for. Split PDF cuts a long file into single pages that each fit.
The text is blurred after compression
The page was scanned small and shrunk again. Rescan at 200 DPI in good light; a clean scan compresses better than a dim one because sensor noise costs bytes.
"File size should be less than 100 KB" on a 99 KB file
Windows Explorer counts 1 KB as 1,024 bytes, so 99 KB there is about 101,000 bytes. A portal counting in thousands refuses it; set Target size to 95 and compress again.
"Only PDF allowed" for your scan
The scan was saved as a photo. Build the PDF at the right size with JPG to PDF under 100 KB.
Questions about 100 KB PDFs
Which documents usually have to be under 100 KB?
Mostly supporting proofs on Indian application forms: category, income and domicile certificates, mark sheets, a cancelled cheque or passbook page for bank details, and ID proofs. Each field can have its own limit, so one form may ask for a 100 KB certificate and a 300 KB mark sheet on the same screen. The notification of the exam or scheme lists every limit.
How many pages can fit in a 100 KB PDF?
One or two pages of a grayscale scan fit comfortably, and a typed document exported from Word can hold dozens because text costs very few bytes. If a multi-page scan will not fit, check whether the form really needs every page.
Does compressing to 100 KB break a digitally signed certificate?
Yes. Any tool that rewrites the file invalidates a cryptographic signature, such as the one on a DigiLocker-issued or e-signed document, because the signature covers the exact bytes. If the portal verifies that signature, upload the original and ask the office about the size limit; if it only needs a readable copy, compressing is fine.
Should I scan in color or black and white for a 100 KB limit?
Grayscale is the best compromise: stamps, signatures and the photo on an ID card stay recognizable, and the file is far smaller than in color. Pure black-and-white scans are smaller still but turn photos into dot patterns, so keep them for text-only pages. Scan at 150–200 DPI; 300 DPI only adds bytes the target will remove again.
Is my certificate safe to upload here?
Files travel over an encrypted connection, no account is needed, and uploads and results are deleted automatically 30 minutes after processing. The how it works page shows each step a file goes through.
What if the portal limit is 200 KB instead?
Use the next rung of the ladder: compress PDF to 200 KB keeps more resolution, which helps mark sheets with small print. You can also type any number into Target size on this page.
