Flatten

Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload your PDFs

Drop up to 20 PDFs, each up to 95 MB. A file with an open password has to be unlocked first, because the tool must read the form layer.

  2. 2

    Review what is kept

This page turns Remove metadata on, while Keep links and Keep bookmarks stay on. Change any of them under Advanced settings.

  3. 3

    Press Flatten

Download the flat PDF. The upload and the result are deleted from the server 30 minutes after processing.

What survives when you flatten a PDF online

The tool works on the interactive layer only. Form answers, checkboxes, dropdown choices, comments, highlights, stamps and signature widgets are drawn into the page; existing page text, images and vector graphics are left alone. Links are annotations too, living in the same layer, which is why many flatteners drop them. Here Keep links carries them over, so a table of contents or a web address in a footer still works, and Keep bookmarks leaves the outline panel intact for reviewers who jump between exhibits.

Kept: links and bookmarks
On by default and switchable under Advanced settings.
Unchanged: text and fonts
With the Vector method, page text stays selectable and searchable.
Merged: optional layers
Merge layers combines layers so a hidden one cannot be switched back on.
Removed here: metadata
Author, title and producing software go with Remove metadata.

Will a flattened PDF change in file size?

Image method, 200 DPI

Often larger

Each page becomes a picture; a text page can weigh several times more

Vector is the default

Vector method

≈ same size

Field appearances are merged as vector content; typically within a few percent

Vector flattening adds a few drawing instructions per field and removes the field objects, so the size barely moves, and a form full of scripts and hidden layers can even get slightly smaller. The Image method trades size for certainty: only visible pixels survive, which removes anything hidden under the surface, but text stops being selectable. 200 DPI is sharp on screen and on paper; 300 suits fine print. If the result must fit an upload cap, compress it afterward.

Flatten PDF files privately, in batches of up to 20

  1. Up to 20 files per run

Each PDF of up to 95 MB is flattened with the same settings. To send a stack of forms as one document, join the flat copies with merge PDF.

  2. Deleted after 30 minutes

Uploads and results are removed automatically; the privacy policy describes the handling in full.

  3. No account

There is no sign-up, so no file is tied to an email address or a profile.

Batches are common with HR onboarding packets and tax forms, where one person fills and signs a dozen PDFs, and all twelve fit in one run. Merging the flat copies afterwards helps the recipient too: one file, with a bookmark per form, is easier to review than twelve attachments. If you are still deciding whether you need flattening at all, or whether Print to PDF would do, the guide on how to flatten a PDF compares the methods.

Flatten PDF online questions

Can I flatten several PDFs in one go?

Yes, up to 20 PDFs per run, and the same settings apply to every file in the batch. Each comes back as its own flat PDF, downloaded one by one or as one ZIP. If the recipient wants a single document, merge the flat copies afterwards.

Why must a PDF be unlocked before flattening?

An open password encrypts the whole file, form layer included, so the tool cannot read the fields it has to draw. Remove the password using the one you know, flatten, and protect the flat copy again if needed.

Does flattening hide text under a black box?

No. Vector flattening merges what sits on top; it does not erase what lies underneath. A black rectangle added as a comment becomes part of the page, but the text below can still be copied out. For a true redaction, set Flatten as to Image, which keeps only the visible pixels.

Why did my PDF get bigger after flattening?

The Image method was probably on, or a high Resolution. Each page is then stored as a picture, and a picture of a text page outweighs the text itself. Switch back to Vector, or use 150 to 200 DPI.

Does Remove metadata change how the pages look?

No. It deletes document properties such as author, title, creating app and dates, which viewers show under file properties. Turn it off if a records system relies on the title field.
