PDF to WebP Converter

A PDF embedded in a web page makes visitors download the whole document before they see anything. Converting the pages to WebP gives you ordinary images that load inline, scale with the layout and weigh less than the same pages as JPG or PNG.

Why convert PDF to WebP for a website

Google announced WebP in 2010, built on the VP8 video codec, to cut the weight of images on the web. For a PDF page the gain shows in two places. Compared with PNG, a page with photos or gradients shrinks dramatically because WebP can discard detail you will not see. Compared with JPG at a similar visual quality, files typically come out smaller again, which matters when a restaurant menu or product catalog has a dozen pages.

At the default 150 DPI an A4 page becomes 1240 × 1754 px and a US Letter page 1275 × 1650 px. That is enough to stay sharp in a 600 to 700 px content column on a high-density phone screen. For a grid of page thumbnails, 72 to 100 DPI is plenty. WebP itself caps images at 16383 × 16383 px, a limit you will only meet with very large drawings at 600 DPI.

WebP quality settings for PDF pages

  1. 50

    Thumbnails only; text edges smear

  2. 70

    Photo-heavy pages, catalogs

  3. 80

Default here: mixed text and images

  4. 90

    Small type, colored text, charts

  5. 100

    Largest files, rarely worth it

Where WebP pages work well

  • Blog posts and landing pages that show a document preview
  • Online menus, flyers and catalogs viewed on phones
  • Image CDNs and CMSs that serve WebP by default
  • Pages placed on colored backgrounds with Transparent background

Where to pick something else

  • Email attachments, where some desktop clients still show WebP as a file
  • Printing, where 300 DPI PNG or TIFF is safer
  • Archives that need one file per document
  • Pages someone must edit in older desktop software

PDF

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

WEBP

WebP image

WebP is an image format released by Google in 2010 to make web pages load faster. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation in a single format. Lossy WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPEGs of similar visual quality, and lossless WebP is usually smaller than PNG. Every current browser supports it, but some older desktop software, print services and upload forms still reject it. Windows, macOS and most modern image editors can open WebP files.

PDF pages are turned into WebP when they have to appear inside a website, blog post or online store as fast-loading images rather than as a document download.

Publishing PDF pages as WebP images

Name the files before they go live. The ZIP numbers them by page, so rename page-01.webp to something like spring-menu-page-1.webp so the URL describes the content. Add width and height attributes in the HTML so the layout does not jump while images load, and lazy-load every page below the first.

Keep a link to the original PDF next to the images for anyone who wants to print or search it. For background on how WebP compares with AVIF and HEIC for the rest of your site, read our explainer on AVIF, HEIC and WebP.

PDF to WebP questions

Can a WebP file hold several PDF pages?

No. WebP has no concept of pages; its only multi-image feature is animation, which is not the same thing. Every PDF page becomes its own .webp file, numbered in page order inside the ZIP.

What quality setting should I use for PDF pages on a website?

Around 80 is the usual sweet spot for pages that mix text and photos. Text-heavy pages can show soft, slightly colored edges below 70, so raise Quality toward 90 if the page is mostly small type.

Do all browsers show WebP images now?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera have supported WebP for years, and Safari added it in version 14 in 2020. Any browser your visitors are likely to use today can display the images, so a JPG fallback is rarely needed.

Is a WebP page image readable by search engines?

Search engines index the image itself, not the words inside it. Give each image descriptive alt text and put the key text of the page in HTML next to it, or link to the original PDF so the full text can still be crawled.

Why are the colors around my text slightly blurry in WebP?

Lossy WebP stores color at half the resolution of brightness, a technique called chroma subsampling. Black text is fine, but thin red or blue lettering can bleed. Raise Quality or use PDF to PNG for pages full of colored small print.

What if someone needs the pages as JPG later?

Convert the WebP files with WebP to JPG when an email client, older editor or upload form refuses them.
