QR Code Generator SVG

An SVG QR code is drawn from squares described as geometry, not from pixels, so a designer can scale it to any size without a blurry edge. This page starts with SVG selected; type the content and download a file that drops straight into Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma or a print layout.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Choose the content

Keep QR code type on Website link and paste the address into Link, or switch the type to Wi-Fi, contact, location or any other kind. Download as is already set to SVG.

  2. 2

    Set colors and quiet zone

Under Advanced settings keep Quiet zone at 4 modules, set Code color to the ink your printer will use and tick Transparent background if the code sits on a light design element.

  3. 3

    Generate and place

Press Generate, place the SVG in your layout, scale it to the final size and run a test print before the full order.

Answer

How do I get a QR code as an SVG file?

Enter your link or other content, leave Download as on SVG and press Generate. The file is a scalable vector QR code with no watermark and no expiry date.

Why designers and printers ask for an SVG QR code

SVG became a W3C Recommendation in 2001 and is now readable by every browser and every major design app. For a QR code it is close to ideal: the symbol is nothing but dark squares on a grid, so the vector file is small, the edges stay mathematically straight at any scale, and the print shop never has to upsample a bitmap.

Screens describe color in RGB, and so does the SVG. Presses print in CMYK, so the shop converts the black of the code during prepress. For a small code, ask for single-ink 100% black (C0 M0 Y0 K100) rather than a rich black built from four inks; four plates that land a fraction of a millimeter apart give the module edges a colored fringe. If the job has a spot color, the code can be printed in it, as long as the ink is dark.

1:1

2 × 2 cm

Business card

Short link, scanned at about 20 cm. Treat 2 cm as the floor.

1:1

3 × 3 cm

Flyer, menu or table card

Read at arm's length; a vCard or Wi-Fi code needs this much.

1:1

10 × 10 cm

A4 poster on a wall

Scanned from about 1 m, following the 10:1 rule.

1:1

30 × 30 cm

Shop window or banner

Read from about 3 m across a pavement.

The usual rule of thumb is a code width of one tenth of the scanning distance. It assumes a short link; long payloads need more room because their modules are smaller. All sizes are for the code itself, plus the white quiet zone of 4 modules around it.

SVG or PNG QR code: which file to download

SVG is right when

  • The code goes to a print shop, sign maker or packaging supplier
  • You do not know the final size yet
  • You want to recolor or align it in a design app
  • A laser engraver or plotter will cut it

PNG is easier when

  • It goes into Word, Google Docs or an email signature
  • A form or platform only accepts JPG or PNG uploads
  • Someone without design software has to open it
  • It will only ever be shown on a screen

For everything in the second column, the PNG QR code generator gives you a pixel file at the resolution you choose. If a printer asks for a PDF instead of an SVG, choose PDF in Download as, or convert the file you already have with SVG to PDF.

Before the file leaves your hands

  • Scan the placed code at final size on a test print
  • Keep the 4-module quiet zone clear of text and borders
  • Ask for 100% K black, not rich black
  • Do not add effects, shadows or rounded module edits
  • Check contrast if you used a transparent background
  • Name the file after the destination, not qr-final-2.svg

SVG QR code questions

Why does Image size not change my SVG?

Because an SVG has no pixels to count. Image size sets the resolution of PNG downloads; a vector file is scaled in the layout app instead, and it looks equally sharp at 2 cm or 2 m.

Can I recolor the SVG QR code in Illustrator or Figma?

Yes, the modules are ordinary filled shapes. Change the fill like any other vector object, but keep the code darker than its background and the quiet zone empty.

Is SVG or EPS better for a commercial printer?

Both are vector. Most current print workflows accept SVG or PDF, and some older prepress setups and sign makers still ask for EPS by name. Pick the one your printer lists, or send a PDF, which every shop can open.

Can I engrave or cut an SVG QR code?

Yes. Laser engravers and vinyl cutters read SVG paths, and Cricut Design Space accepts SVG uploads. Check that the engraved or cut area ends up darker than the material around it.

I only have a PNG of an old QR code. Can I get an SVG?

The cleanest way is to scan the old code, copy its content and generate it again here as SVG. Tracing the PNG with a PNG to SVG converter also works for sharp, high-contrast images, but regenerating avoids every rounding error.
