Convert PNG to SVG Free

PNG is the best raster starting point for a vector: its edges are lossless and its background is often already transparent. Upload the PNG, choose how many colors to keep, and download an SVG whose shapes you can scale and edit.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload your PNG

Drop a PNG logo, icon, sticker or drawing, or up to 20 at once. Bigger exports trace better; a 1000 px wide PNG beats a 64 px favicon.

  2. 2

    Pick a tracing mode

Leave Color mode on Color with 8 colors for a typical logo, switch to Black & white for line art, or set Number of colors to the exact count in your design.

  3. 3

    Download the SVG

Press Vectorize to SVG. Open the file, zoom in on a curve, and if edges look stepped, raise Smoothing under Advanced settings and run it again.

Why PNG is the best image to convert to SVG

PNG was created in 1995 as a patent-free replacement for GIF and became a W3C Recommendation in October 1996. Its compression is lossless, so a red edge next to a white edge stays exactly that, with no ripples or blocks. For a tracer that is the ideal input: the boundary between two colors is where the pixels say it is, so the fitted curve hugs the original design.

PNG can also carry an alpha channel, a separate opacity value for every pixel. Logos and icons exported from Figma, Canva or Photoshop typically use it, and it acts as a ready-made mask: everything transparent is background, everything opaque is artwork. A JPEG of the same logo has a white box baked in, which is why JPEG to SVG needs stronger smoothing and often Remove background.

Because the input is clean, this page uses Detail 70 and Smoothing 40, keeping small corners and serifs that JPEG pages smooth away. Our PNG to SVG guide walks through them with examples.

Color, grayscale or black and white tracing

Default

Color

Each color cluster becomes its own layer of filled paths.

  • 2–64 colors
  • Keeps brand colors
  • Stacked shapes, easy to recolor
Best for: Logos, icons, stickers, flat illustrations
Shades

Grayscale

Like color mode, but the clusters are gray tones.

  • 2–64 gray levels
  • No color casts
  • Good for pencil and charcoal
Best for: Sketches, engravings, monochrome prints
Two tones

Black & white

One cut: every pixel is either ink or nothing.

  • Threshold 1–254
  • Smallest file
  • Single path set
Best for: Signatures, stencils, vinyl and laser cuts

PNG to SVG threshold for line art

  1. 60

    Only the darkest ink survives

  2. 128

    Default split at mid-gray

  3. 170

    Keeps faint or anti-aliased strokes

  4. 220

Light gray turns black; edges thicken

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

SVG

Scalable Vector Graphics

SVG is an XML-based vector format standardised by the W3C in 2001. Instead of pixels it describes shapes, paths and text, so it stays sharp at any size and is usually tiny for logos and icons. It supports transparency, CSS styling, scripting and animation, and every browser renders it natively. SVG is unsuitable for photographs, and complex illustrations can become slow to render. Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and browsers can open and edit it.

A PNG already has hard edges and often a transparent background, so people trace it to SVG to get a logo or icon that scales for print, cutting machines and responsive sites; SVG to PNG goes the other way, rendering a vector into pixels for apps that cannot read SVG.

Prepare the PNG before tracing

  1. Export large

Save the PNG at two or three times its display size. Curves are fitted to pixel edges, so more pixels means truer curves.

  2. Flatten effects

Drop shadows, glows and gradients each become dozens of thin bands. Hide them before export and add them back in the SVG if needed.

  3. Count your colors

Note how many solid colors the design uses and enter that number. For a CNC or laser job, PNG to DXF traces the same file into a CAD format.

Convert PNG to SVG: common questions

Can I convert PNG to SVG free without creating an account?

Yes. Upload, trace and download without an account, up to 20 files per batch. Uploaded PNGs and the finished SVGs are removed from the server after 30 minutes.

What happens to the transparent areas of my PNG?

The PNG alpha channel tells the tracer which pixels are part of the artwork, so fully transparent areas stay empty instead of becoming a white shape. You usually do not need Remove background; turn it on only if the PNG has a solid white or colored backdrop baked in.

Why does my traced PNG icon have a faint outline around each shape?

Smooth PNG edges are anti-aliased: the outermost pixels are half-transparent or a blend of two colors. The tracer can read that blend as an extra thin color. Lower Number of colors by one or two, or raise Smoothing, and the halo merges into the shape.

How does this compare with Illustrator Image Trace or Inkscape Trace Bitmap?

The approach is the same: reduce colors, find the edges, fit curves. Illustrator ships presets such as Black and White Logo and 16 Colors, and Inkscape offers brightness cutoff and multi-color scans. Here the equivalent choices are Color mode, Number of colors and Threshold, with nothing to install.

Will the text in my PNG become editable text in the SVG?

No. Letters are traced as outlined shapes, which keeps their look but not the ability to retype them. That suits a logo; for a screenshot full of text, retyping is quicker.

My PNG uses exactly five colors. Can the SVG keep them exactly?

Set Number of colors to 5. The tracer then groups every pixel into five clusters, and on a flat-color PNG those clusters land on the original colors.
