Location QR Code Generator

Paste the latitude and longitude of a place and get a QR code that opens that exact point in a maps app. It suits spots an address cannot describe well: a side entrance, a parking area, a trailhead or a field where the event tent stands.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Copy the coordinates

Find the spot in a maps app and copy its coordinates in decimal degrees, for example 48.858370, 2.294481. Paste the first number into Latitude and the second into Longitude.

  2. 2

    Pick the file type

Keep Download as on PNG for a web page or a document. Open Advanced settings for SVG, PDF or EPS, a larger Image size or a higher Error correction level for outdoor signs.

  3. 3

    Generate and walk the pin

Press Generate, scan the result with an iPhone and an Android phone, and check that the pin lands on the right door before anything goes to print.

A street address sends people to the front of a building. Coordinates send them to the exact spot you chose, which is why couriers, event planners and park rangers print them as a QR code instead of digits nobody wants to type.

Find the latitude and longitude for a location QR code

iPhone

  1. 01In Google Maps, touch and hold the spot until a red pin drops; the coordinates appear in the search box.
  2. 02In Apple Maps, touch and hold to drop a pin, then swipe the place card up to see Latitude and Longitude.
  3. 03Copy latitude first, then longitude.

Android

  1. 01Open Google Maps and touch and hold the exact spot, such as a gate or a loading bay.
  2. 02The dropped pin shows its coordinates at the top of the screen; tap them to copy.
  3. 03Paste them into the two fields here.

Desktop browser

  1. 01Right-click the spot on the Google Maps website.
  2. 02The first line of the menu shows the coordinates; click it to copy.
  3. 03Split the pair at the comma.

How many decimal places a map location QR code needs

  1. 0.01

Two decimals, about 1.1 km: a town, not a meeting point

  2. 0.001

About 110 m: the right block, not the right door

  3. 0.0001

About 11 m: a building entrance or a car park

  4. 0.00001

About 1.1 m: a specific gate, bench or stall

  5. 0.000001

About 11 cm, the finest step the fields accept

One degree of latitude is roughly 111 km, so every extra decimal place makes the pin about ten times more exact. East-west steps shrink toward the poles, so the same decimals are a little more precise in Oslo than in Singapore. Phone GPS is rarely better than a few meters, which is why four or five decimals are enough for almost every sign; six add digits, not accuracy.

Fewer digits also mean a shorter payload and a less dense pattern, which helps on a small invitation card. For a gate sign or a trail marker, download the SVG QR code so the print shop can scale it without blur, and set Error correction to High for codes that will sit in rain and sun.

Map location type

Coordinate link

Stores the point as a geo: link, the URI scheme the IETF defined in RFC 5870 in 2010, such as geo:48.858370,2.294481.

  • Not tied to any company or account
  • The phone picks its default maps app
  • Handling on iPhone has varied between iOS versions, so test it
Best for: Gates, trailheads, temporary event sites
Website link type

Google Maps URL

A link such as https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=48.858370,2.294481 opens Google Maps or its website.

  • Opens on every phone with a browser
  • Can point at a business listing with reviews and hours
  • Depends on Google keeping the URL format
Best for: Shops and restaurants with a listing
Website link type

Apple Maps URL

Apple documents links like https://maps.apple.com/?ll=48.858370,2.294481 for Apple Maps.

  • Native app on iPhone, iPad and Mac
  • Other phones get a web page
Best for: Invitations to an Apple-heavy crowd

Location QR code questions

How do I make a QR code that opens Google Maps at a location?

Use the coordinates here for a neutral map pin, or open the place in Google Maps, copy the share link and make a Website link code from it instead. The link version always opens Google Maps or its web page, while a coordinate code lets the phone choose its own maps app.

Why does the pin land a few streets away?

Usually the coordinates were swapped or a minus sign was lost. Latitude comes first and runs from -90 to 90; longitude comes second, and places west of Greenwich, including all of the Americas, have a negative longitude. Rounding to two decimals also moves the pin by up to about a kilometer.

Can a location QR code show a place name or opening hours?

A coordinate code only carries the point itself. If guests should see a name, photos and hours, link to the place's Google Maps or Apple Maps listing with a Website link code instead.

Does a location QR code work without mobile data?

The coordinates are read from the code offline, but the map tiles around the pin need a connection unless the area was downloaded for offline use in Google Maps or another maps app. For remote trails, print the coordinates as text under the code as well.

Can I put several locations on one wedding invitation?

One code holds one point, so make one code per place, for example the ceremony and the reception. For a long list of stops, the bulk QR code generator turns a pasted list of map links into one code per line.
