PDF QR Code Generator
A QR code cannot carry a PDF inside it; it carries the address where the PDF lives. Upload the file to your website or a cloud drive, make the link public, paste it here and you get a code that opens the document on any phone.
QR Code Generator
Link is required.
Nothing is uploaded; the code is generated for you to download.
Width and height of the PNG in pixels. 1000 px prints sharply up to about 8 cm; vector formats ignore this.
Blank border around the code, counted in modules (the small squares). Scanners need at least 4 on a busy background.
Higher levels still scan when part of the code is dirty or covered by a logo, but the pattern becomes denser.
Keep it dark. Light codes on dark backgrounds fail on many older phone cameras.
Needs strong contrast with the code color; white is the safest choice.
How to use this tool
- 1
Host the PDF and copy its link
Put the PDF on your website, Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, set sharing to public, and copy the full https:// address.
- 2
Paste it into Link
The QR code type is already set to Link to a PDF. Paste the address into Link; under Advanced settings pick SVG or PDF for print and a larger Image size for PNG.
- 3
Generate and test logged out
Press Generate, then scan the code with a phone that is not signed in to your cloud account. If it opens the PDF there, it will open for everyone.
How a QR code for a PDF opens the file
You host the PDF
Your site or cloud drive keeps the file and serves it at one public address.
The code stores the address
A short https:// link turns into the black and white modules of a static QR code.
The phone fetches the file
The camera reads the link and the browser downloads the PDF from your host.
Make the PDF link public on Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive
| Organisation | Requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | Share, then under General access change Restricted to Anyone with the link, role Viewer. Copy the link from the same dialog. | — |
| Dropbox | Copy a shared link. Links ending in ?dl=0 open a preview page; changing it to ?dl=1 makes the browser download the file instead. | — |
| Microsoft OneDrive | Share with Anyone with the link, if your work or school account allows it. Some company policies block anonymous links. | — |
| Your own website | Upload the PDF to a stable path such as /files/menu.pdf and link to that address, not to a page that embeds it. | — |
Keep the same QR code when the PDF changes
A printed code is permanent, so the link inside it has to outlive every new version of the document. On your own site that is easy: upload the new menu under the same file name and the code opens it. In Google Drive, deleting the old file and uploading a new one creates a new link; use Manage versions on the existing file instead, which replaces the content and keeps the address.
Avoid links with a date or version in them, such as menu-march.pdf, and avoid links that expire, like time-limited transfer services. If several PDFs belong together, for example a menu and an allergen sheet, merging the PDF files into one document means one code and one link to look after.
Why a PDF QR code opens an error instead of the file
"You need access" or a sign-in page
The share setting is still private. Switch it to anyone with the link and test from a phone that is signed out.
404 page after the file was replaced
The new upload got a new address. Restore the old file name or path, or update the existing file in place.
The download never finishes on mobile data
The PDF is too heavy. Compress it, or split a long brochure into the part people need at the door.
The camera shows text instead of a link
The address lacks https:// at the start. Paste the full link copied from the browser's address bar.
PDF QR code questions
Can I upload a PDF and turn it straight into a QR code?
Not with a static code: the file has to sit on a server so the phone can download it after scanning, and this generator does not host files. Services that offer upload-and-QR keep the PDF on their servers and usually put their own short link inside the code.
How large can the PDF be?
The QR code does not care, because it holds only the link. Your visitors do: a 40 MB scan of a menu takes a long time on a weak mobile signal. Run large files through Compress PDF before you upload them, and keep restaurant menus to a few megabytes.
Will the PDF open in the browser or download?
It depends on the phone and the host. Safari on iPhone shows most PDFs inline, while many Android phones download the file and open it in a PDF viewer. Drive and Dropbox links show a preview page first.
Can I make a QR code for a PDF that only staff can open?
Yes, by keeping the cloud sharing restricted to your organization or by protecting the file itself. Staff will be asked to sign in or type a password, and anyone else who scans the code sees an access request instead of the document.
Does a PDF QR code track how many people scanned it?
A static code sends no data anywhere. If you need numbers, host the PDF on your own site and read the download count in your web analytics, or put a tagged link inside the code; the dynamic QR code generator page explains the redirect approach.
