Increase JPEG Size

A JPEG's size is decided at the moment it is saved: lower quality, fewer bytes. To make a JPEG bigger for an upload form, it has to be saved again in a way that keeps more data, and this page does that while leaving the picture and its pixel dimensions as they are.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Drop in the JPEG

Upload one .jpg or .jpeg, or a batch of up to 20. Photos straight from a phone, WhatsApp downloads and scanner exports all work.

  2. 2

    Set the minimum

Minimum size starts at 30 KB. Replace it with the figure your form asks for, in KB or MB, and leave How to add size on Auto.

  3. 3

    Save the bigger JPEG

Press Increase size and download. The file is still a standard JPEG, upright thanks to Auto orient, with the same width and height as before.

Increasing JPEG size is a re-save, not a stretch. The image is encoded again with less compression, then topped up with harmless padding if the minimum is still out of reach.

Why a JPEG is smaller than a form expects

JPEG compression splits the picture into 8 × 8 pixel blocks and discards the fine variation inside each block that the eye is least likely to miss. The quality setting decides how much is discarded. Every app picks its own default: the reference libjpeg encoder uses 75 on a 0–100 scale, GIMP suggests 90, and Photoshop uses its own 0–12 scale. WhatsApp and many social apps re-save photos at modest quality to save bandwidth.

That is how a sharp phone photo turns into a 25 KB file after passing through a chat app, and why a form with a 30 KB or 50 KB minimum refuses it. The cure is the reverse of compression: save the same pixels again with less thrown away. When the photo has very little content, such as a face against a plain wall, even top quality may not reach the floor, and invisible padding finishes the job.

If the form asks for the size in a specific number of KB, increase JPG size in KB explains how portals count kilobytes. For background on why the same photo can be a .jpg, a .jpeg or a .png, see JPG vs JPEG vs PNG.

Increase JPEG size questions

How do I increase JPEG size without losing quality?

Use the Auto method on this page. Raising the quality setting stores the existing pixels more faithfully, and padding stores nothing visible at all, so neither step makes the photo worse. The one thing to avoid is repeatedly saving at low quality in an editor first.

Does re-saving a JPEG at quality 100 restore the lost detail?

No. Detail removed by an earlier low-quality save is gone, and a high-quality re-save keeps the image as it is now, artifacts included. The file grows because the encoder throws less away, not because anything is recovered.

Why did my JPEG barely grow with Raise quality only?

If the photo was already saved at high quality, there is little left to gain, and very plain images such as a signature on white paper stay small at any quality. Switch back to Auto so padding can make up the difference.

Can I make a JPEG bigger by converting it to PNG?

Yes, a PNG of the same photo is usually several times larger because it is lossless. Choose PNG in Output format, but only if the form accepts PNG; most exam and job portals list JPG or JPEG alone. The JPG to PNG converter does the same without a size target.

Does Keep metadata change the size of a JPEG?

It can. Phone photos carry EXIF data such as camera model, date, settings and often a small preview thumbnail, which together can take a noticeable share of a small file. Removing it shrinks the file, which is why Keep metadata stays on here.

Why does my JPEG show up sideways on the form?

Phones often store a photo unrotated and add an orientation tag that tells viewers to turn it. Some upload forms ignore the tag. Auto orient rotates the actual pixels so the photo is upright everywhere.
