Increase JPG Size in KB

A form that says "minimum 20 KB" rarely says which kilobyte it means, and the two common definitions differ by 2.4%. Type a number that clears both, and the JPG comes back at or just above it with the same picture and dimensions.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the JPG

Add the JPG or JPEG that was rejected, or up to 20 at once. Other image types are saved as JPG on this page.

  2. 2

    Type the safe number

Minimum size starts at 21 KB, the safe value for a 20 KB floor. Use the table below for other limits, or multiply the form's number by 1.024 and round up.

  3. 3

    Increase and verify

Press Increase size, download, and check the size in your file manager before uploading.

Increase JPG size in KB: which kilobyte the form means

In 1998 the IEC introduced the term kibibyte (KiB) for 1,024 bytes so that kilobyte could keep its metric meaning of 1,000. Software never fully switched. Windows still divides by 1,024 and labels the result KB; Apple changed Finder to 1,000 bytes per KB in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in 2009. Upload portals inherit whatever their programmers chose.

The 2.4% gap matters only when a JPG sits right at a limit. A 20,200-byte photo is 20.2 KB to one checker and 19.7 KB to another, so it can pass on your laptop and fail on the portal. Indian exam and bank forms usually write sizes as plain KB; the US State Department's DS-160 photo rule writes kB, with a maximum of 240 kB. Neither gives a byte count.

This page takes the guesswork away by starting at 21 KB, the smallest whole number that clears a 20 KB floor under both definitions. The JPG is re-saved at higher quality and padded only if needed, as on increase JPEG size. To set the width and height and the KB size in one go, use the image resizer in pixels and KB instead.

1,024bytes per KB as Windows File Explorer counts them

macOS Finder has used 1,000 bytes per KB since Snow Leopard in 2009.

Increase JPG size in KB when the form still says too small

  • The portal counts 1,024 bytes per KB

Re-run with the number from the table, for example 52 instead of 50.

  • You attached the original, not the download

Pick the new file from Downloads; browsers add a number to its name when the original sits in the same folder.

  • The phone handed the site a re-encoded copy

When an iPhone uploads from the Photos picker, it may convert and shrink the image. Save the JPG to Files and pick it from there.

  • The size is right but the type is not

A PNG renamed to .jpg is still a PNG inside. Keep Output format on JPG here so the file is a real JPEG.

Increase JPG size in KB questions

Is 1 KB 1,000 or 1,024 bytes on an upload form?

It depends on the developer, and forms almost never say. The international standard says 1,000, while many programs, including Windows File Explorer, count 1,024. Assume the stricter one for a minimum and the stricter one for a maximum, which the table on this page does for you.

What should I type to make a JPG at least 20 KB?

Type 21. Twenty kilobytes is at most 20,480 bytes under either definition, and 21 KB is at least 21,000 bytes, so the file passes whichever way the portal counts.

How many KB is 1 MB when a form says maximum 1 MB?

Either 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB, and in bytes anywhere from 1,000,000 to 1,048,576. Staying under 976 KB keeps you below the smallest of those readings. For a minimum of 1 MB, switch Unit to MB and enter 2, or stay in KB and type 1049.

Why do my Mac and my Windows PC show different KB sizes for one JPG?

Finder divides by 1,000 and File Explorer by 1,024, then rounds up. A 500,000-byte photo reads 500 KB on a Mac and 489 KB on Windows. Both are correct; they are different units with the same name.

Does setting a DPI value change the JPG's size in KB?

Barely. DPI tag writes a number into the file header, a few bytes at most, and does not touch the pixels. Set it only when the form checks resolution, typically 200 or 300 DPI.

Can I increase a JPG to a size in MB instead of KB?

Yes. Change Unit from KB to MB and type the number, for example 2 for a form that wants at least 2 MB.
