Upload any image and get back an SVG made of real vector paths that scale to any size, edit in Illustrator or Inkscape and cut cleanly on a Cricut, not a picture tucked inside an SVG wrapper.

Answer

How do I convert an img to SVG properly?

Trace it. This tool finds the edges and color areas in your image and redraws them as vector paths, so the SVG scales without blur. Renaming a file to .svg, or wrapping a JPG inside an SVG, gives you no vector shapes at all.

Convert img to SVG by tracing, not wrapping

SVG became a W3C Recommendation in 2001 as a text format for shapes: paths, fills and strokes described by coordinates. A JPG or PNG is the opposite, a grid of colored pixels. Turning one into the other properly means tracing: grouping pixels into areas of similar color and fitting curves along their edges.

Some converters skip that step and embed the bitmap inside an SVG file. The result has the right extension but blurs when enlarged and offers nothing to edit or cut. UltKit's general image converter can do exactly that kind of wrapping when you choose SVG output there, which is fine for a page template that only needs the extension. For logos, icons, stamps and drawings you want real shapes, and that is what this tracer produces.

Img to SVG settings that change the result

Color mode and number of colors
Color traces each color area as its own shape, from 2 to 64 colors. Grayscale does the same with gray tones; Black & white uses a single threshold.
Detail and smoothing
Detail decides how small a speck survives. Smoothing rounds off the jagged edges that JPG compression and low resolution leave behind.
Curves
Smooth curves for most artwork, Straight lines for geometric logos, Pixel edges to keep pixel art blocky on purpose.
Remove background and outlines only
Remove background drops the large shape touching the edges so the logo floats on transparency. Outlines only exports cut paths for machines.

Img to SVG questions

What does img mean in img to SVG?

It is shorthand for any image file, borrowed from the HTML <img> tag that puts pictures on web pages. People searching img to SVG usually have a JPG or PNG logo and want a vector version. Any common raster format works here.

Can I convert a .img disk image file to SVG?

No. Files ending in .img are usually disk images, byte-for-byte copies of a drive such as a Raspberry Pi OS download, and contain no picture at all. A few very old .img files are GEM bitmaps from the 1980s; open those in an old graphics program and save as PNG first.

Will the traced SVG work inside an HTML img tag?

Yes. Every current browser displays SVG through <img src="logo.svg">, scaled crisply to whatever width your CSS sets. Leave Optimise SVG on so the file stays small enough to load quickly.

When should I switch to Black & white with a threshold?

Use it for signatures, stamps, handwriting and one-color logos. Every pixel darker than the Threshold (128 by default) becomes black and the rest disappears, which gives the cleanest edges. Lower the threshold if thin strokes vanish; raise it if shapes look blotchy.

How do I get outlines only for a plotter or vinyl cutter?

Tick Outlines only under Advanced settings. The shapes are exported as strokes without fill, which plotters and blade cutters follow as cut lines. Choose DXF in Convert to if your machine's software prefers it over SVG.

Why does my traced image have far fewer details than the original?

Tracing simplifies by design. Raise Detail to keep small specks and texture, and raise Number of colors up to 64 for illustrations. Photos still turn into flat, poster-like areas, because vector shapes cannot reproduce continuous tone; see photo to SVG for what to expect.
