JPEG to SVG Converter

Turn a scanned stamp, a signed page or a logo saved as .jpeg into an SVG built from editable outlines. Tracing redraws every color area as a shape, so the result stays crisp on a billboard, a business card or a vinyl cutter.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the JPEG files

Drop one or more .jpeg or .jpg files, up to 20 per batch and 95 MB each. Crop the scan to the artwork first so the paper margin does not become a shape.

  2. 2

Match the settings to the source

This page starts with 6 colors and Smoothing at 70 for scans. Choose Black & white in Color mode for ink signatures and stamps, and use the table below for other sources.

  3. 3

    Vectorize and inspect

Press Vectorize to SVG, open the result in a browser and zoom to 400%. If corners look melted, lower Smoothing; if specks remain, lower Detail under Advanced settings.

A JPEG is a photograph of your artwork; an SVG is a description of it. The converter looks at the pixels, decides where each flat color begins and ends, and writes those borders down as curves.

JPEG to SVG converter: tracing, not wrapping

There are two ways to produce a file that ends in .svg from a JPEG, and only one of them helps. The shortcut stuffs the original pixels into an SVG image element. It is still a bitmap and blurs when enlarged. Real conversion is tracing: grouping pixels into a small number of colors and fitting Bézier curves along the borders between them.

Tracing works because logos, stamps, seals, signatures and line drawings were made from a handful of flat colors in the first place. The tracer recovers that intent. Six colors cover most two-tone logos photographed on paper, because shadows and paper tint each claim a color of their own. Inkscape's Trace Bitmap, built on Peter Selinger's open-source Potrace library, follows the same idea on the desktop.

JPEG input needs more cleanup than most. The format was designed for photos and quietly removes fine detail in 8 × 8 pixel blocks, which leaves ripples next to sharp edges. That is why this page raises Smoothing to 70 and trims Detail to 50: the ripples are averaged away before curves are fitted. If you also have a PNG of the same artwork, PNG to SVG will start from cleaner edges.

From Live Trace to Image Trace: how tracers got here

  1. 1992

    JPEG standardized

ITU-T T.81 defines the compression used by nearly every camera and scanner since.

  2. 2001

    SVG 1.0

The W3C publishes SVG as a Recommendation, giving vectors a common open file format.

  3. 2005

    Live Trace

Illustrator CS2 adds automatic tracing for designers who used to redraw scans by hand.

  4. 2012

    Image Trace

Illustrator CS6 replaces Live Trace with Image Trace and its color and path presets.

JPG

JPEG image

JPEG (or JPG) is the most widely used photo format, standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It uses lossy compression that discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which keeps photos small enough for the web, email and phone storage. It handles smooth gradients and natural scenes well, but sharp text, line art and flat colours pick up visible blocky or fuzzy artefacts. JPEG has no transparency and no animation, and every re-save loses a little more quality. Every browser, phone, camera and image editor can open it.

SVG

Scalable Vector Graphics

SVG is an XML-based vector format standardised by the W3C in 2001. Instead of pixels it describes shapes, paths and text, so it stays sharp at any size and is usually tiny for logos and icons. It supports transparency, CSS styling, scripting and animation, and every browser renders it natively. SVG is unsuitable for photographs, and complex illustrations can become slow to render. Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and browsers can open and edit it.

JPEG files usually arrive straight from a scanner, camera or email, so people trace them when a stamp, signature or printed logo has to scale cleanly for print, the web or a cutting machine; SVG to JPEG goes the other way, flattening a vector for places that accept only photos.

When a JPEG should stay a JPEG

Photographs do not become vector photographs

A portrait, product shot or landscape has thousands of gradual tones. Traced at 64 colors it turns into flat, poster-like bands, and the SVG can be many times larger than the JPEG. Trace photos only for a deliberate stylized look or a single-color cut outline, as explained on photo to SVG; keep the JPEG for anything that must look real.

JPEG to SVG converter questions

Is a JPEG to SVG conversion any different from JPG to SVG?

No. JPEG and JPG are the same format with a longer or shorter extension, a leftover from three-letter file extensions. Cameras and scanners often write .jpeg, web tools often write .jpg, and the tracer treats both identically.

Why do thin colored fringes appear around edges in my traced JPEG?

Most JPEG files store color at half the resolution of brightness, a trick called chroma subsampling. Around a sharp red-on-white edge the color bleeds a pixel or two, and the tracer turns that bleed into slivers of pink. Fewer colors and a higher Smoothing value absorb them.

Which output should I choose if Illustrator, Cricut or a laser cutter comes next?

SVG opens in all three and in every browser. Pick AI or EPS in Convert to if a print shop asks for those, and DXF for CAD and most laser software.

Can I edit the traced SVG afterward in Inkscape or Illustrator?

Yes. Each color area is a separate path with its own fill, so you can recolor, delete or reshape it with the node tools. Turning on Optimise SVG merges tiny paths, which makes the layer list easier to work with.

How do I keep the thin strokes of a scanned signature?

Use Black & white and adjust Threshold. Pixels darker than the threshold become black, so raising it from 128 toward 170 keeps faint pen strokes, while lowering it removes gray paper grain.

Does tracing a JPEG remove the white paper behind the artwork?

Only if you ask it to. Turn on Remove background and the largest shape touching the edges, normally the paper, is dropped, leaving the drawing on a transparent canvas.
