How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the .ppt file

Add one or more PowerPoint 97–2003 files, up to 20 at a time and 95 MB each. Newer .pptx and slide-show .pps files can go in the same batch.

  2. 2

    Check slides and resolution

Images is one per slide and Resolution is 150 DPI, so a 4:3 slide becomes 1500 × 1125 px. Under Advanced settings, Pages picks all slides, the first one or a range.

  3. 3

    Convert to PNG

Press Convert to PNG and save the ZIP. The images are numbered in slide order, ready to drop into a document, wiki or new deck.

PPT to PNG is the quickest way to rescue the slides from an old PowerPoint file: each slide becomes a lossless picture, so diagrams, tables and small labels stay exactly as sharp as they were drawn.

Why a PPT to PNG converter still matters for old decks

The .ppt extension belongs to the binary format PowerPoint used from version 97 through 2003. It is not XML and not a ZIP package; it is a compound file that only PowerPoint and a handful of compatible apps understand. Plenty of these files are still around in course archives, company drives and email attachments, and phones, chat apps and many web viewers refuse to preview them.

Turning every slide into a PNG solves that once. The images open anywhere, they can be pasted into a new PPTX or a Google Slides deck, and they record what the slide looked like before anyone resaves or edits it. PNG is the better pick over JPG here because old decks are mostly text, bullet lists, clip art and charts on flat backgrounds, which PNG stores without any blur and usually at a modest size.

Most .ppt decks use the 4:3 slide that was the default until PowerPoint 2013, 10 × 7.5 inches. That gives a squarer image than modern 16:9 slides, which suits documents and printouts well. If the deck will be shown again in a meeting, consider PPT to PDF as well, so you have both images and a document with selectable text.

PPT vs PPTX: how the PowerPoint format changed

  1. 1987

    PowerPoint 1.0

Released for the Macintosh by Forethought, which Microsoft bought the same year.

  2. 1997

    PowerPoint 97

Introduces the binary .ppt format that versions up to 2003 keep using.

  3. 2007

    PPTX arrives

Office 2007 switches to Office Open XML; .ppt becomes the 97–2003 compatibility format.

  4. 2008

    ISO/IEC 29500

Office Open XML is published as an international standard after ECMA-376 in 2006.

  5. 2013

    16:9 by default

New decks start widescreen instead of the 4:3 slide most .ppt files use.

PPT

Microsoft PowerPoint 97–2003 presentation

PPT is the binary presentation format used by PowerPoint from PowerPoint 97 until PPTX replaced it in 2007. It stores slides, images, notes and animations in a proprietary structure, and files tend to be larger than PPTX. Newer PowerPoint features cannot be saved in it. PowerPoint, LibreOffice and Google Slides still open PPT files.

PNG

Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless raster format published in 1996 by the PNG Development Group and later standardised by the W3C and ISO. It keeps every pixel exactly, supports full alpha transparency and handles text, sharp edges and flat colours without artefacts. That precision makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons and interface graphics. The trade-off is size: photographs saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPEG or WebP. All browsers, operating systems and editors open PNG files.

Legacy .ppt decks are the ones most likely to open badly or not at all on phones and newer apps; turning each slide into a PNG preserves what the old deck looked like in a format that never needs PowerPoint again.

PPT to PNG questions

Do I have to convert PPT to PPTX before making images?

No. The binary .ppt file is read directly and each slide is drawn as a PNG. If you also want to keep editing the deck in a current PowerPoint, PPT to PPTX is the separate step for that.

How do I know whether my file is PPT or PPTX?

Look at the extension, or at the title bar when the deck is open: a modern PowerPoint shows Compatibility Mode next to the name of a .ppt file. A PPTX is a ZIP package, so renaming a copy to .zip and opening it shows folders of XML; a .ppt will not open that way.

Why does an old deck look slightly different as an image?

Decks from the 2000s often use fonts that were standard then and are not installed everywhere today, and old WordArt or clip art can be drawn with small differences. The converter substitutes a close font when one is missing, which can move a line break. Compare a couple of slides before sharing the whole set.

Can a PNG slide have a transparent background?

Turn on Transparent background under Advanced settings. Areas of a slide with no fill become see-through, but a slide whose design template paints a background color or picture keeps it, because that fill is part of the slide.

What size are PNG images from a 4:3 PowerPoint slide?

A standard 4:3 slide is 10 × 7.5 inches, so it becomes 720 × 540 px at 72 DPI, 1500 × 1125 px at 150 DPI and 3000 × 2250 px at 300 DPI. A .ppt that was set to 16:9 is wider at the same DPI.
