WAV to MP4 Converter

A WAV straight out of a recording app or a DAW is the best possible source for a video upload, and also the heaviest. Turn it into an MP4 with moving bars or your artwork, and the sound is compressed exactly once, from the full-quality original.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the WAV

Drop the .wav export, up to 95 MB per file. Add a cover image too if you would rather show artwork than the waveform.

  2. 2

    Pick the look

Show starts on Waveform with Bars style. Change Waveform style and Waveform color under Advanced settings, or switch to Uploaded image for a still cover.

  3. 3

    Convert to MP4

Press Convert to MP4. The audio is encoded at 320 kbps, the highest Audio bitrate offered, and the files are deleted from the server after 30 minutes.

Encode your audio from the WAV, not from an MP3 copy: the MP4 then holds sound that has been compressed once instead of twice.

Why convert WAV to MP4 before you upload

Microsoft and IBM introduced WAV in 1991 as part of the RIFF file family, and it remains the default export of most recording software, from Audacity to Logic Pro and Ableton Live. It holds plain PCM samples, which is why it sounds identical to the session but is many times larger than an MP3 of the same length.

Video platforms will not take it on its own. YouTube, Instagram and TikTok require a video track, and none of them keep your WAV untouched: YouTube's published upload guidance asks for AAC audio, at 384 kbps for stereo, and re-encodes everything for streaming. So the useful move is to encode the WAV once, at a high bitrate, inside an MP4 with a picture.

A waveform suits beat previews, demos and podcast clips because it shows the audio is playing even when the viewer scrolls with the sound off. For a release, upload the cover art with the WAV and set Show to Uploaded image.

WAV

Waveform Audio File

WAV is an audio container created by Microsoft and IBM in 1991, usually holding uncompressed PCM audio. It preserves full quality, which makes it standard for recording, editing, sound effects and mastering. A minute of CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB, so files are large. Every operating system, editor and most players open WAV, though metadata support is limited.

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

Producers and podcasters convert WAV to MP4 because the platform needs a video and the WAV is the cleanest master to encode from; going via MP3 first would add an extra generation of loss.

What happens to the WAV inside the MP4

  1. PCM samples

The WAV is read sample by sample, exactly as your recorder or DAW wrote it.

  2. One AAC encode

The sound is compressed at the Audio bitrate you set, 320 kbps on this page.

  3. Picture track

Bars, a cover or a color background are rendered at the Video size and joined with the audio.

Settings that work

  • Beat previews: Bars or Spectrum, white on black, 1920 × 1080
  • Podcast clips: Line style, 1080 × 1920 for Reels and Shorts
  • Album tracks: Uploaded image with Image fit on Blurred fill
  • Rough mixes: a 2 to 3 second Fade out hides an abrupt ending
  • Long sessions: split the WAV or export 16-bit to stay under 95 MB

WAV to MP4 questions

Why is my WAV file too big to upload?

WAV stores raw PCM samples with no compression. CD-quality stereo uses 1,411 kbps, about 10.6 MB per minute, and a 24-bit, 48 kHz bounce uses about 17 MB per minute. At 95 MB per file, that means roughly 9 minutes of CD-quality WAV or under 6 minutes of 24-bit audio; export longer pieces at 16-bit or as WAV to MP3 first.

Does a 24-bit or 96 kHz WAV keep its resolution in the MP4?

No. The MP4 carries compressed audio at a standard sample rate, so the extra bit depth and sample rate are not passed through. Listeners on YouTube or Instagram would never receive them anyway, because each platform encodes its own streaming copies from your upload.

Is it better to upload WAV-based MP4 than MP3-based MP4?

Slightly, yes. Starting from WAV means the audio goes through one lossy encode before the platform's own, instead of two. On busy mixes with cymbals and reverb tails, fewer generations of compression keep the top end cleaner.

Will the waveform follow the music?

Yes. The bars, line, circle or spectrum are drawn from the audio itself, so they rise with loud passages and settle in quiet ones. Pick a Waveform color that contrasts with the Background color, such as white on black.

Can I add a fade at the end of the track?

Set Fade out under Advanced settings to between 0.5 and 10 seconds. The picture fades to black and the sound fades to silence together, which hides an abrupt stop in a rough mix.
