MP3 to MOV Converter

When an editing timeline, a Keynote slide or a client's delivery sheet asks for a .mov, an MP3 will not do. Give the audio a picture and save it as a QuickTime movie.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the MP3 and artwork

Drop the MP3 with a cover image, or switch Show to Waveform or Plain color. Up to 20 files go in one batch.

  2. 2

    Confirm MOV and the frame

Convert to is already set to MOV and Video size to 1920 × 1080. The artwork is contained on a black background so nothing is cropped.

  3. 3

    Convert to MOV

Press Convert to MOV and download the movie. The audio is written at 256 kbps, and every file is deleted from the server after 30 minutes.

MOV and MP4 are siblings: MPEG built MP4 on Apple's QuickTime format, so the choice is about who receives the file, not about quality.

MOV vs MP4: one family tree

  1. 1991

    QuickTime 1.0

Apple ships QuickTime with the .mov movie format for the Mac.

  2. 1998

    Chosen by MPEG

ISO adopts the QuickTime file format as the basis of the MPEG-4 file format.

  3. 2003

    MP4 published

ISO/IEC 14496-14 defines .mp4 on that shared structure.

  4. 2009

    iPhone video

The iPhone 3GS records video, saved as .mov, a habit iPhones keep today.

Why convert MP3 to MOV instead of MP4

Because both formats share a structure, players treat them almost interchangeably. The difference shows up at the edges. MOV is Apple's own container, it is what the iPhone camera writes, and Final Cut Pro, Motion, iMovie and Keynote treat it as their home format. Broadcast and agency delivery documents written around Mac workflows frequently specify .mov, and a file that does not match the spec can be bounced back.

An MP3 cannot sit in those places on its own because it has no picture. This page adds one, a cover image contained on black by default, and writes the result as a QuickTime movie with H.264 video and AAC audio at 256 kbps. Editors can then drop it on a timeline next to camera footage that is also MOV.

If you have a video already and only need a container change, MP4 to MOV rewraps it. Our guide on converting MOV to MP4 covers the reverse case, when a MOV has to leave the Apple world.

Apps and workflows that ask for MOV

Mac editing

  • Final Cut Pro timelines next to iPhone footage
  • iMovie projects on Mac and iPad
  • Motion titles with a music bed

Presentations and handoffs

  • Keynote slides with a music cue
  • Agency delivery specs that name .mov
  • Templates that only list QuickTime

Better as MP4

  • YouTube, Instagram and TikTok uploads
  • Android phones and WhatsApp
  • Websites and email attachments

MP3 to MOV file size

≈1.9 MBper minute of 256 kbps audio, most of the MOV's size

A still picture adds little on top, because unchanged frames compress to almost nothing. An animated waveform adds more, since every frame differs.

MP3

MP3 audio

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) is a lossy audio format developed largely at the Fraunhofer Institute and standardised by MPEG in 1993. It removes sounds the ear is unlikely to notice, shrinking music to about a tenth of CD size at 128–320 kbps. All patents have expired, and every phone, car stereo, browser and media player supports it. Quality loss is audible at low bitrates and accumulates with re-encoding.

MOV

QuickTime movie

MOV is the QuickTime container format created by Apple in 1991. iPhones record MOV files, and professional editing tools use it for high-quality codecs such as Apple ProRes, including versions with transparency. It can hold multiple video, audio, timecode and subtitle tracks. MOV files from editing software can be very large, and some Windows apps, Android phones and websites play them poorly or not at all.

MP3 to MOV is a handoff format change for Apple-centered workflows: the audio gains a picture track and lands in the QuickTime container that Mac editors, Keynote and some delivery specs name explicitly.

MP3 to MOV questions

Do I need MOV, or will MP4 work in Final Cut Pro?

Final Cut Pro and iMovie import both, since the codecs inside are the same. Choose MOV when a template, a project setting or a colleague's checklist asks for it by name; otherwise MP3 to MP4 gives a file that also suits social apps and Android.

Will a MOV made from an MP3 play on Windows?

Yes, in current versions. The Media Player and Movies & TV apps on Windows 10 and 11 play H.264 MOV files, as does VLC. Very old setups that relied on the discontinued QuickTime for Windows are the only ones likely to struggle.

Can I put an audio-only MOV into a Keynote presentation?

Keynote accepts the MOV as a movie on a slide, and the picture you chose shows while the sound plays. That is handy for a cover image during a music cue, or a waveform behind a recorded quote.

Why is there a black border around my artwork?

Image fit is set to Contain on this page so square album art is never cropped in a 16:9 frame. Change it to Blurred fill for a softer look, or to Cover to fill the frame and trim the edges.

How do I get the MP3 back out of a MOV later?

Use MOV to MP3, which drops the picture and saves the sound as an MP3 for music apps and players.
