How to use this tool

Drop the M4A and an optional image
Add the .m4a from Voice Memos, GarageBand or your music library. Include a JPG, PNG or HEIC photo if you want it on screen; without one, set Show to Waveform or Plain color.

Set the frame and audio bitrate
Video size starts at 1920 × 1080. Under Advanced settings, Audio bitrate is preset to 256 kbps, the rate of most AAC music files, so the sound is not squeezed below its source.

Press Convert to MP4 and save the video. The M4A, the image and the MP4 are removed from the server 30 minutes after processing.
How do I convert M4A to MP4 for YouTube?
Upload the M4A with a photo, keep Video size on 1920 × 1080 and press Convert to MP4. The result is a still-image video with your audio, ready for the YouTube upload page.
Why convert M4A to MP4 when both are MPEG-4
The .m4a extension marks an MPEG-4 Part 14 file that contains only sound, usually AAC and sometimes Apple Lossless. The iPhone's Voice Memos app saves every recording this way, GarageBand exports to it, and the iTunes Store has sold its music as 256 kbps AAC .m4a files for years.
Because AAC is the native audio codec of MP4, the sound itself needs no translation. What is missing is a video track. YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook build their players around moving pictures, so an upload without one is refused or fails during processing. A still frame, a waveform or a solid background fixes that.
That picture costs very little space. An unchanging frame is compressed almost to nothing between keyframes, so most of the MP4's size is still your audio. If you are going the other direction and need only the sound from a clip, MP4 to M4A pulls it back out.

MPEG-4 audio (M4A)
M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 file, popularised by Apple's iTunes. It usually contains lossy AAC audio, but it can also hold lossless ALAC. AAC in M4A generally sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, and the format is used for iPhone voice memos, Apple Music downloads and many podcasts. Most modern devices play M4A, but some older players, car stereos and web tools only accept MP3.

MPEG-4 video
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

Where the MP4 goes next
For a full episode or a song on YouTube, keep the 16:9 frame. For a teaser on Reels, Shorts or TikTok, convert the same M4A again with Video size set to 1080 × 1920 and trim the audio first so the clip stays short; vertical frames get the full phone screen in those feeds.

M4A to MP4 questions
Can I just rename .m4a to .mp4?
The renamed file usually plays in a media player because both extensions use the same container. It still holds only an audio track, though, and video sites that expect a picture either reject it or show an error after processing. Converting adds the video track they are looking for.
Will an Apple Lossless M4A stay lossless in the MP4?
No. Apple Lossless (ALAC), which Apple open-sourced in 2011, uses the same .m4a extension as AAC, but the MP4 here carries compressed audio at the Audio bitrate you choose. At 256 or 320 kbps the difference is inaudible on phones and laptops, and the upload platforms compress the sound again anyway.
Why is my old iTunes purchase not accepted?
Songs bought before 2009 were often sold with FairPlay copy protection and carry the .m4p extension. Protected files cannot be decoded outside Apple's authorized apps, so they cannot be turned into video. Tracks downloaded again as unprotected AAC convert normally.
Does the cover art embedded in my M4A appear automatically?
Upload the artwork as a separate image file to be sure it is used. Many M4A files carry embedded album art, but this tool takes the picture from the image you add, the waveform, or the background color you set in Show.
How long can the M4A recording be?
The limit is the file size, 95 MB per file, rather than a time cap. A 128 kbps voice memo stays under that for well over an hour, while a 256 kbps music file reaches it at roughly 50 minutes.
Can I make several videos from several M4A files at once?
