OGG to MP4 Converter

Voice messages, game sounds and open-source recordings often arrive as .ogg or .opus, which video apps will not take. Give the audio a waveform or a picture and post it as a standard MP4.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

Upload the OGG or OPUS file

Drop .ogg, .oga or .opus files, up to 20 at a time. Add a photo in the same batch if you want it on screen instead of the waveform.

  2. 2

    Check the vertical frame

This page starts on 1080 × 1920 with a Line waveform, the usual look for a voice clip. Pick another Video size or Waveform style if the clip is music or goes to YouTube.

  3. 3

    Convert to MP4

Press Convert to MP4. The sound is re-encoded for MP4 at 128 kbps, plenty for speech, and the files are deleted from the server after 30 minutes.

An OGG file is a container, not a codec. Before it can live inside an MP4, the audio within it has to change format, and a picture has to be added.

What is an OGG file?

Ogg.ogg · .oga · .opus
An open, royalty-free container from the Xiph.Org Foundation that usually holds Vorbis or Opus audio, and sometimes FLAC. It is the standard format for many games, Linux apps and messaging voice notes.

Why OGG audio is re-encoded for MP4

Vorbis reached version 1.0 in 2002 as a patent-free answer to MP3, and the IETF standardized Opus as RFC 6716 in 2012. Opus is exceptionally good at speech at low bitrates, which is why WhatsApp and Telegram use it for voice messages and why Minecraft and countless other games ship their sound effects as .ogg files.

MP4 grew up with a different codec. AAC is the audio format of the MPEG-4 standard, and it is what YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Apple devices expect inside an MP4. A specification for Opus in MP4 exists, but upload pipelines and phone players do not reliably support it, so this tool decodes the Vorbis or Opus stream and encodes AAC at the Audio bitrate you choose.

The picture is the other half. The default here is a Line waveform on a vertical frame, which suits a spoken clip on Reels, Shorts or Status. For a song, switch Waveform style to Bars or upload cover art; if the next step is cutting the clip shorter, our guide on converting MP4 to MP3 explains the reverse trip.

OGG

Ogg Vorbis audio

OGG files use the Ogg container from the Xiph.Org Foundation, most often with the lossy Vorbis codec and sometimes Opus or FLAC. Vorbis is open and royalty-free and sounds comparable to or better than MP3 at similar bitrates. It is widely used for game audio, open-source software and some streaming services. Older iPhones, some car stereos and many editors do not support OGG.

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

OGG to MP4 moves audio from the open Xiph.Org container into the video format social apps require, re-encoding Vorbis or Opus to AAC because MP4 players and upload pipelines expect it.

Turn a WhatsApp or Telegram voice note into a video

Voice messages are Opus audio, saved as .opus on most Android phones and shared as .ogg or .opus from iPhone.

  • Keep the vertical 1080 × 1920 frame for Status
  • Line waveform reads well for a single voice
  • Add a profile photo with Show set to Uploaded image

OGG to MP4 questions

Why can't I upload an OGG file to Instagram or YouTube?

Both services publish video, so they need a picture track, and an .ogg holds only sound. Even apps that play audio usually expect MP3 or AAC rather than Vorbis or Opus. Wrapping the audio in an MP4 with a waveform clears both hurdles at once.

Is a WhatsApp .opus voice note the same as an OGG?

Essentially, yes. WhatsApp records voice messages with the Opus codec inside an Ogg container, and depending on the phone the exported file ends in .opus or .ogg. Both are accepted here and are handled the same way.

Does the sound get worse when Vorbis or Opus becomes AAC?

Any lossy-to-lossy conversion adds a small loss, but voice notes are recorded at low bitrates to begin with, so 128 kbps AAC has more than enough room to carry them faithfully. For music in Ogg Vorbis, raise Audio bitrate to 192 or 256 kbps.

Should I choose WebM instead of MP4?

Choose WebM only when the video is going on your own web page, since WebM is designed around Opus and Vorbis audio and plays in Chrome, Firefox and Edge. For social apps, messaging and phones, keep MP4, which every platform accepts.

I only need an MP3, not a video. Which tool?

Use OGG to MP3, which skips the picture and gives a file that plays in any music app, car stereo or editor.
